Mervin R. Dilts

Mervin R. Dilts (born February 26, 1938 in Flemington , New Jersey ) is an American classical philologist .

Life

Mervin Robert Dilts studied at Gettysburg College ( BA 1960) and at Indiana University Bloomington , where he received his Masters in 1961 and his PhD in 1964 . He then worked as an Assistant Professor at Knox College and from 1965 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , where he was appointed Associate Professor in 1969. From 1971 to 1979 he was also the Financial Trustee of the American Philological Association . In 1979 he moved to New York University as Professor of Classics , where he was active in teaching and research until his retirement . Since then he has been a Fellow of Lincoln College (Oxford) , where he founded the Dilts-Lyell Research Fellowship in Greek palaeography .

Dilts is particularly concerned with Greek rhetoric . His studies on textual criticism and the history of transmission resulted in several critical editions , each of which replaced outdated editions. He edited the Politiae des Herakleides Lembos (1971), the Varia Historia des Claudius Aelianus (1974), the speeches of Aeschines (1997) and Demosthenes (2002–2009). He also published the scholia for Demosthenes and Aeschines.
