Anonymous Seguerianus

The Anonymus Seguerianus is an ancient rhetorical treatise from around AD 200. The script, written in Greek, is only preserved in one manuscript (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale , Parisinus graecus 1874, 13th century) and named after the person who discovered it : The French scholar Nicolas Séguier de Saint-Brisson (1773-1854) discovered the font in 1838 and published it for the first time in 1840.

The title τέχνη τοῦ πολιτικοῦ λόγου , handed down in the manuscript, is not the original, rather τέχνη περὶ τῶν τεσσάρων τοῦ πολιτικοῦ λόγου μερῶν or something similar comes into question. The author is unknown. Hans Graeven , a later editor of the script, suspected a rhetor of the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD named Kornutos , but this was rejected by later research. The attribution has led to confusion with the Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Cornutus .

The treatise contains a comprehensive presentation of the rhetorical theory which is of great importance in the history of ancient rhetoric . It deals with the four parts of the speech (προοίμιον = preface, διήγησις = presentation, πίστις = argumentation, ἐπίλογος = conclusion), then the four officia oratoris (in detail: εὕρεσις = collection of materials, τάξις = briefly the arrangement of materials = xλέξς; .

The rich presentation of the rhetorical theory is based on the previous works by Alexandros Numeniu , Neokles and Harpokration, as well as on other, unspecified sources; the writings of Hermogenes of Tarsus , however, are not taken into account. The information on the rhetorical systems of Apollodorus of Pergamon and Theodoros of Gadara are of particular value .

The rhetorical treatise, however, has not been handed down in its original form, but only in an extract. "Only by accepting an epitome can one understand and explain the multiple abbreviations, additions, deletions, repetitions, displacements, misunderstandings." ( Julius Brzoska ) Reconstructing the underlying script or scripts is difficult and has not been unanimously clarified in research.
