Valerius Harpocration

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valerius Harpokration (Greek Οὐαλέριος Ἁρποκρατίων ) was an Alexandrian grammarian of the imperial era. His life dates are not known. Based on the authors quoted by him, he could have lived under Emperor Tiberius at the earliest . If he is identical to the harpocration mentioned in the Historia Augusta as the teacher of Lucius Verus , then he lived in the 2nd century.

In the Suda he is mentioned as the author of a lexicon of Attic speakers ( Λεξικὸν τῶν δέκα ῥητόρων ) and a collection of winged words ( ἀνϑηρῶν συναγωγή , lost). The lexicon was probably one of the sources of the Suda. It contains alphabetically arranged comments on people and explanations of terms (especially from the areas of law and trade). Since the works on which Harpokration was based (including the grammarian Didymos Chalkenteros and the Attic story of Atthides ) were lost early on, the lexicon is the only surviving source in some areas today.

The text of the work is available both in full and in excerpts. The epitomized version can be traced back to the 9th century, as it found its way into the Myrobiblion of Photios . The complete version also shows traces of revision and interpolation.
