Henry Alonzo Edmundson (born June 14, 1814 in Blacksburg , Virginia , †  December 16, 1890 in Montgomery County , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1861 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Henry Edmundson first attended private schools and then studied at Georgetown University in Washington, DC After completing a law degree and being admitted to the bar in 1838, he began to work in Salem in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1848 Edmundson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the twelfth constituency of Virginia, where he succeeded William B. Preston on March 4, 1849 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1861 . These were shaped by the events and discussions leading up to the civil war . From 1853 to 1855 Edmundson was chairman of the Committee to Control Expenditure on Public Buildings.

During the Civil War he served in various units as a lieutenant colonel in the Confederation Army . After the war, Edmundson practiced law again until 1880. Then he got involved in agriculture. He died on December 16, 1890 on his Falling Waters estate in Montgomery County.
