John Hill (politician, 1800)

John Hill (born July 18, 1800 in New Canton , Buckingham County , Virginia , †  April 19, 1880 in Buckingham Court House , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1839 and 1841 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Hill was a cousin of Congressman John T. Harris (1823-1899). He attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1818 at the Washington Academy , from which later the Washington and Lee University emerged . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1821, he began to work in this profession. Politically, he later joined the Whig Party , founded in the 1830s .

In the 1838 congressional election , Hill was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Joseph Johnson on March 4, 1839 . Since he was not confirmed in 1840, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1841 . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Hill practiced law again. In 1850 and 1851 he was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Virginia Constitution. He then served as a public prosecutor for a few years. Between 1870 and 1879 he was a judge in Buckingham County.
