Joseph Neville

Joseph Neville ( 1730March 4, 1819 in Hardy County , Colony of Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1795 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The exact date and place of birth of Joseph Neville are not known. He grew up during the British colonial era and first appeared politically in the early 1770s. Between 1773 and 1777 he was a member of the county council of Hampshire County in what is now West Virginia . He joined the American Revolution and was a delegate to freedom assemblies in 1775 and 1776. During the War of Independence he served in the Continental Army . Between 1777 and 1782 he sat several times in the Virginia House of Representatives . He later served on a commission that determined the controversial border between the states of Maryland and Pennsylvania .

Politically, Neville was an opponent of the then federal government under President George Washington ( anti-administration faction ). In the congressional elections of 1792 he was elected in the third constituency of Virginia in the then still meeting in Philadelphia US House of Representatives, where he succeeded Andrew Moore on March 4, 1793 . Since he refused to run again in 1794, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1795 .

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Joseph Neville no longer appeared politically. He died on March 4, 1819 in Hardy County, what is now West Virginia.
