Campbell Slemp

Campbell Slemp (born December 2, 1839 in Turkey Cove , Lee County , Virginia , †  October 13, 1907 in Big Stone Gap , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1903 and 1907 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Campbell Slemp first attended a private school and then graduated from Emory and Henry College in Emory . He later worked in agriculture and real estate. During the civil war he served in various units in the Confederation Army , in which he rose to colonel. After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1879 and 1882 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . In 1889 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor of Virginia.

In the congressional elections of 1902 Slemp was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded William Francis Rhea on March 4, 1903 . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on October 13, 1907 . After a special election, his son Bascom was chosen as his successor.
