Harry Libbey

Harry Libbey (born November 22, 1843 in Wakefield , Carroll County , New Hampshire , †  September 30, 1913 in Hampton , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harry Libbey attended public schools in his home country. In 1863 he moved to Hampton, Virginia, where he worked in commerce. In 1869 he became a judge in Elizabeth City County . Politically, he became a member of the short-lived Readjuster Party . In the congressional election of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded John F. Dezendorf on March 4, 1883 . After being re-elected as a candidate for the Republican Party , which he had since joined, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1887 .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Libbey worked in the oyster business. He was also the Republican District Chairman in Hampton. From 1907 he also acted as a postman there . Libbey held this post until his death on September 30, 1913.
