Watkins Moorman Abbitt (born May 21, 1908 in Lynchburg , Virginia , † July 13, 1998 ibid) was an American politician . He represented the state of Virginia as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

Watkins Abbitt graduated from Appomattox Agricultural High School in 1925 . He then made his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Richmond in 1931 . He then practiced as a lawyer in his practice. From 1932 to 1948 he served as the Appomattox County attorney . In 1945 Atelier was a member of Virginia's constitutional convention. He was also a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1964 . He also ran a bank.

Atonement was elected to the 80th Congress as a Democrat in a special election to fill the vacant seat created by the death of US MP Patrick H. Drewry . He was then re-elected twelve more times. His term of office ran from February 17, 1948 to January 3, 1973. In 1972, he decided not to run for the 93rd Congress. During his tenure in Congress in 1956 he was involved in the constitution of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.

Abbitt died on July 13, 1998. He was buried in the "Liberty Cemetery" in Appomattox.
