James Johnson (politician, before 1788)

James Johnson (* before 1788 in Virginia , † December 7, 1825 in Norfolk , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1813 and 1820 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The date and place of birth of James Johnson have not been recorded. He attended public schools in his home country and then studied at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Williamsburg. In 1788 he was a member of the congregation that ratified the United States Constitution for Virginia. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1797 and 1813, Johnson sat in the Virginia House of Representatives several times . Since 1807 he lived in Isle of Wight County , where he also practiced as a lawyer.

In the congressional elections of 1812 Johnson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded Thomas Newton on March 4, 1813 . After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his resignation on February 1, 1820 . This period was initially shaped by the events of the British-American War .

Since February 1, 1820, James Johnson was in charge of customs in Norfolk. He died there on December 7, 1825.
