The 13 e demi-brigade de Légion étrangère (German: 13th half-brigade of the Foreign Legion ; abbreviated: 13 e DBLE ) is a mechanized unit of the Foreign Legion . It is the only unit in the French army that still carries the designation half-brigade .

history

The unit was set up in Sidi bel Abbès in 1939 from veterans of the 1 e REI. She fought in North Africa during World War II and in France in 1945. In the Indochina War , the 13 e DBLE took part in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu . The unit also fought in the role of a mobile reserve in the Algerian war . In 1962 the demi-brigade was stationed in Djibouti . It was deployed from this base in Somalia, Rwanda and the Ivory Coast.

The demi-brigade has been stationed in Camp du Larzac since 2016 . It replaced the disbanded "122 e régiment d'infanterie" as an infantry training regiment at the "Commandement de la formation et de l'entrainement interarmes (training command of the combined arms) CEITO".

It is equipped with the VBCI wheeled armored personnel carrier .

For the year 2018, the half-brigade is to have a staff of 1,200 legionnaires and be divided into five combat companies, one support company and one reconnaissance company.

The 13 è DBLE is the first unit of the French armed forces, which was equipped in June 2017 with the HK 416 F as a replacement for the FAMAS .
