Paul Powell

Paulus Powell (* 1809 in Amherst County , Virginia , †  June 10, 1874 in Amherst , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1849 and 1859 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Paulus Powell first attended private school and then studied at Amherst College in Virginia. He later held several local offices in his home country. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1843 and 1849 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . In the congressional election of 1848 Powell was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded William L. Goggin on March 4, 1849 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1859 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . In 1858 he was not re-elected.

In 1863 and 1864 Powell was again a member of the state parliament. After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died in Amherst on June 10, 1874.
