David E. Satterfield III

David Edward Satterfield III (born December 2, 1920 in Richmond , Virginia , †  September 30, 1988 there ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1981 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

David Satterfield was the son of Congressman Dave E. Satterfield . He attended public schools in his home country and studied at the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . During World War II , he served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945 . After that he was a member of their reserve. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1948, he began working in this profession in Richmond. Between 1950 and 1953 he served as assistant federal prosecutor . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1954 to 1956 he was a councilor in Richmond; between 1960 and 1964 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives .

In the 1964 congressional election , Satterfield was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded J. Vaughan Gary on January 3, 1965 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1981 . During this time, the Vietnam War , the end of the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair took place . In 1980 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, David Satterfield practiced as a lawyer in Washington and Arlington . He died in Richmond on September 30, 1988.
