Smith S. Turner

Smith Spangler Turner (born November 21, 1842 in Warren County , Virginia , †  April 8, 1898 in Front Royal , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1894 and 1897 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Smith Turner was a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington . During the Civil War he served in various functions as an officer in the Confederation Army . Between 1865 and 1867 Turner was a math teacher at a girls' school in Winchester . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1869, he began to work in Front Royal in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He served in the Virginia House of Representatives from 1869 to 1872 . Between 1874 and 1879, Turner served as the district attorney in Warren County. For eight years he served on the Board of Visitors of the Virginia Military Institute.

After the resignation of MP Charles Triplett O'Ferrall , Turner was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the seventh seat of Virginia , where he took up his new mandate on January 30, 1894. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1897 . In 1896 he renounced another candidacy. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Smith Turner retired from politics. He died in Front Royal on April 8, 1898.
