Wilbur Clarence "Dan" Daniel (born May 12, 1914 in Chatham , Virginia , †  January 23, 1988 in Charlottesville , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1969 and 1988 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Dan Daniel grew up on a tobacco plantation in Mecklenburg County . He attended public schools in his home country as well as the Dan River Textile School in Danville . Between 1939 and 1968 he worked for Dan River Mills, Inc. This time was only interrupted during the Second World War, in which Daniel participated as an officer in the US Navy . After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1959 and 1968 he was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives . In 1951 he became state chairman of the American Legion veterans' organization; In 1956 he took over their national chairmanship. In 1968 he was also President of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce. He also served as President of the President's People-to-People Committee.

In the 1968 congressional election , Daniel was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded William M. Tuck on January 3, 1969 . After nine re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 23, 1988 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell .
