Thomas Whitehead (born December 27, 1825 in Lovingston , Nelson County , Virginia , †  July 1, 1901 in Lynchburg , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Whitehead received only a limited education and then worked in commerce. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1849, he began to work in this profession in Amherst . During the Civil War he was a captain in the Confederation Army . In 1865 he was elected to the Virginia Senate, but not admitted there. In 1866 and 1869 he was elected Attorney in Amherst County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1872 Whitehead was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded John T. Harris on March 4, 1873 . Since he refused to run again in 1874, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875 . In 1876 Thomas Whitehead became editor of the Lynchburg News newspaper ; from 1880 he published the Lynchburg Advance newspaper. At the same time he practiced as a lawyer again. From 1888 until his death he was the Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture . He died on July 1, 1901 near Lynchburg, where he was also buried.
