Red Bank is a municipality in Monmouth County , New Jersey , United States . At the 2000 US census it had 11,844 residents.
The city of Red Bank was formed as such on March 17, 1870 from parts of the Shrewsbury Township. On February 14, 1879, it became Shrewsbury City, part of Shrewsbury County, but only until May 15, 1879, when Red Bank regained its independence. On March 10, 1908, Red Bank was separated from Shrewsbury Township as a parish by law of the New Jersey Legislature.
The city is often compared to the New York boroughs of SoHo (Manhattan) and Greenwich Village .

The historic Timothy Thomas Fortune House is in Red Bank . The house was the home of slave born journalist Timothy Thomas Fortune and is located at number 94 on West Bergen Place . The building was listed as a Historic Monument on December 8, 1976 by the National Register of Historic Places under number 76001171. In addition, it received an entry in the National Historic Landmark .

Red Bank is on the south bank of the Navesink River , in north Monmouth County, New Jersey. It's not far from New York City . Red Bank is adjacent to Middletown Township and the parishes of Tinton Falls , Fair Haven , Shrewsbury, and Little Silver .
