Monster Magnet is a rock band formed in New Jersey in 1989 . According to its own information, it was played by various bands such as B. Hawkwind , MC5 and Krautrock bands like Amon Düül influenced. At first she experimented with the directions punk , space rock and psychedelic rock . In New Jersey they belonged to an underground stoner rock "family", along with bands like Black Nasa, Lord Sterling, The Atomic Bitchwax and the Gallery of Mites.

Band history

The first EP with the line-up Dave Wyndorf, Tim Cronin, John McBain, Joe Calandra and Jon Kleiman brought out the German company Glitterhouse . After the success of the EP, Monster Magnet signed a distribution contract with the US label Caroline Records , which later included both the second EP Tab with recordings that had been made before the first album and the band's first full album, Spine of God in the USA released. In Germany and Europe these publications continued to appear at Glitterhouse. Monster Magnet claims that it largely owes its inspiration to psychedelic drugs and the Spacerock founders, Hawkwind . With Spine of God they revived Krautrock , laid the foundation for Stoner Rock and rode the wave of grungy that had previously been kicked off by bands like Soundgarden and Nirvana . On the tour for this album, Ed Mundell was added as a new guitarist. He replaced John McBain. Spine of God received critical acclaim and is now considered a classic of the stoner rock genre.

In 1993 Monster Magnet changed the record company again, this time they signed a contract with A&M Records . Under this label they brought out the album Superjudge , which was influenced by spacerock, in the same year (including the Hawkwind cover Brainstorm ). In 1995 the Black Sabbath inspired stoner rock album Dopes to Infinity was released. The song Negasonic Teenage Warhead became quite popular in discos in the mid-1990s. To tour the album Dopes to Infinity , Dave Wyndorf had to be hospitalized because of his drug use and was briefly in mortal danger.

Work on the following album began after a long break in Las Vegas . There Dave Wyndorf inspired sex, money and drugs for the snobby gambling society in Las Vegas. With Phil Caivano, who previously played with Wyndorf with Shrapnel , another guitarist joined the band.

With the Powertrip album in 1998 and Wyndorf's obvious abstinence from drugs, the band turned their backs on their psychedelic past and oriented themselves towards "straight" rock and heavy metal influences. Wyndorf's stage performance, which characterizes "straight" rock, and the group's new style made the Powertrip album the group's most successful album to date. The single Space Lord was represented in several international charts. After the album God Says No was perceived as mediocre by fans, Monster Magnet switched to the smaller record company SPV and dismissed John Kleiman and Joe Calandra, who were supported by bassist Jim Baglino (Lord Sterling) and drummer Bob Pantella (who, however, has not yet been released the album Monolithic Baby! ) were replaced. Shortly before the change of label, the previous company A & M released a greatest hits album.

In February 2004 the album Monolithic Baby was released! , which contains socially critical and political statements. The album and the single Unbroken sold successfully. In April 2005, Monster Magnet announced that long-time guitarist Phil Caivano would no longer play with Monster Magnet. While the band was looking for a new guitarist, Dave Wyndorf took over the second guitar. Since the 2008 tour, Phil Caivano has been a regular member of the band again.

On the evening of February 27, 2006, Dave Wyndorf had to be hospitalized again after a drug overdose. The upcoming tour has been canceled. We didn't hear from him again until over a year later, around mid-2007.

The album 4-Way Diablo was released in November 2007. The album also features a cover version of the Rolling Stones song 2000 Light Years From Home . The sound on this album is more in the direction of stoner rock and reflects on the psychedelic roots of the band.

Monster Magnet initially wanted to refrain from touring and devote themselves to working on new song material. They justified this with the hardships associated with a tour. However, the band played at some festivals in the summer of 2008 (in Germany e.g. at the Southside and the Hurricane Festival) and went on tour at the end of 2008.

In April 2010 a new album was announced. It was released in October 2010 on the Napalm Records label and is called Mastermind . After a few isolated appearances this summer, the band toured Europe in November and December 2010.

Before the 2010 winter tour, lead guitarist Ed Mundell surprisingly quit after 18 years with Monster Magnet. Mundell did not split up with the band in an argument, and he keeps a renewed collaboration open. The guitar parts on the Mastermind album were still recorded by him. Ed Mundell has been replaced by Garret Sweeny since the 2010 tour, who at the time also played for Riotgod like Bob Pantella .

At the end of 2011, the band went on a Dopes to Infinity Club tour for five appearances in Germany . All songs from the 1995 album were played here, as well as some classics. The cities of Berlin, Karlsruhe, Hanover, Hamburg and Munich were on the program.

The band's drummer, Bob Pantella, announced in an interview in January 2012 that the band would start work on a new album this year.

In November and December 2012 the band went on a European tour to play through one of their old albums again. It was Spine of God listed in order as in the recorded music, supplemented by additions of the two previous EPs Monster Magnet and Tab .

For October 2013, the band's eleventh studio album was announced, which is called Last Patrol and contains nine songs. Dave Wyndorf describes the album on the official homepage as "psychedelic space rock with a garage rock feeling of the 60s". The album also includes a cover version of Donovan's Three Kingfishers . Alongside the album, the band's first full US tour in 10 years was announced.

Jim Baglino, the band's longtime bass player, is leaving Monster Magnet in October 2013 for personal reasons. Chris Kosnik, who, like Bob Pantella, also plays in Atomic Bitchwax , was hired as the new bass player .

Of Last Patrol in November 2014 revised version appears as an independent album entitled Milking the Stars: a re-imagining of Last Patrol with four new songs, newly arranged tracks from Last Patrol and two live recordings, which were launched in Brussels. According to Dave Wyndorf, this represents an alternative line of development for Last Patrol. Some songs that sounded dark there are supposed to be happy now, some sound like 1968. Similarly, a Redux version of the 2010 mastermind album will be released in autumn 2015 under the title Cobras and Fire (The Mastermind Redux) , the album title being a quote from the song Hallucination Bomb . This album is supposed to sound a lot less like classic rock, but instead be much more psychedelic, contains instruments such as piano, organ or sitar and was co-produced by Phil Caivano.

The album Mindfucker was announced for March 23, 2018 , which - in contrast to the more psychedelic albums before - should be heavily influenced by MC5 and the Stooges in the "Detroit style" . It is the band's eleventh album and was released again on Napalm Records. In addition, Monster Magnet went on a European tour again in May 2018, including at the Desertfest . A long-awaited North American tour was held in September and October 2018, followed by a European tour from January 2019. Festival performances planned for summer 2019 had to be canceled because singer Dave Wyndorf became so ill that immediate treatment was necessary.

2020 the band started in February with an extensive European tour, in which the complete hit album Powertrip except for the song 19 Witches was performed. In March the band goes on tour in the USA with the album Powertrip. Since the European tour Chris Kosnik has been replaced by Alec Morton, who played with the band's drummer, Bob Pantella, in 1989 in the band Raging Slab .
