Riotgod was an American rock band from Red Bank, New Jersey .
history
The two Monster Magnet members Jim Baglino (bass) and Bob Pantella (drums) toyed with the idea of pursuing their own musical ideas during the Monster Magnet tour in 2006. This took concrete shape during Monster Magnet's tour break in 2007 and began looking for guitarists and singers. Eventually Garrett Sweeny was hired on guitar and Mark Sunshine as singer. The name Riotgod was chosen based on a music project by Mark Sunshine. The first album was initially recorded independently.
Stylistically, the band can be categorized as space rock , hard rock and / or stoner rock . According to a review by Rock Hard magazine, the album Riotgod ranges between Monster Magnet , Kyuss and Soundgarden , which is mainly due to Mark Sunshine's vocals. The band's drummer, Bob Pantella, calls Riotgod's style hard rock in an interview.
After a few local shows in the New York area , the first tour of the midwestern United States and Canada finally took place in 2009.
In 2010 the band signed a record deal with Metalville Records, which reissued their self-produced debut album. In September 2010 a European tour followed with a few stops in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany as well as Austria and Switzerland.
On October 21, 2011, the second album Invisible Empire was released in Europe . A planned European tour, which should also be carried out in Europe in October, had to be canceled and was finally carried out together with the band Astral Doors from late February to early March . Jim Baglino got out in the meantime and was replaced on the tour by Erik Boe.
In early 2012, Riotgod also released a two-track single on 10 "vinyl that included a cover of Queen's song Death on 2 Legs .
On April 14, 2012, Mark Sunshine announced on his Facebook page that he would no longer be part of the band, but Riotgod should continue to exist. On the occasion of a planned appearance of the band at the Wacken Open Air , however, Mark Sunshine rejoined the band in July 2012, so that a tour with a few dates in Germany and Austria could be scheduled afterwards.
For 2013, the band announced work on new material on their Facebook profile on November 30, 2012. The album Driven Rise was released on February 21, 2014 in Europe and on March 18, 2014 in the USA and is available on CD as well as on vinyl.
In August 2014 both guitarist Garret Sweeny and drummer Bob Pantella left Riotgod. One of the reasons given was the difficulty of finding common dates for tours, etc., since both are still active in other bands ( Monster Magnet , The Atomic Bitchwax ). Eric Boe switched from bass to guitar.
In 2014 only Mark Sunshine formed the band, which he now calls "Riotgod Version 4". Work on new material was announced, but on December 13, 2017 it was announced via Facebook that the band had ceased to exist in 2015.
