Caroline Records (also Caroline International or simply Caroline ) is an American record company that was founded in 1973 by Richard Branson as a sub-label of Virgin Records . Over the years the brand name has been revived frequently and as Caroline Distribution also served as a distributor for various labels in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, Caroline International, based in London as a subsidiary of the Universal Music Group, offers a label service and distribution. In addition, albums and re-releases continue to appear regularly on the label.

history

It served Virgin from 1973 to 1976 mainly as a label for little commercial albums of the genres progressive rock and jazz and especially for the European market. Early albums included Outside the Dream Syndicate by Tony Conrad and Faust , Homesick James & Snooky Pryor's self-titled album, and an album by Lol Coxhill and Steve Miller . The label was initially discontinued in 1976. In its early years, the label sold more than 200,000 units from a small warehouse in Greenwich Village .

In 1983, Caroline Records returned as a US distributor. It served from 1986 as a kind of pseudo- independent label within the concert structure of Virgin Records. In the 1980s and 1990s, a number of punk albums were released on the label , including by Misfits , Industrial like Cabaret Voltaire , Metal like Mercyful Fate or crossovers like Suicidal Tendencies and Corrosion of Conformity . Caroline Distribution took over the distribution of Fat Wreck Chords , Alternative Tentacles and Tooth and Nail, among others . In 1993 distribution and label were separated after Virgin Records was bought by EMI Group . While the label remained with Virgin Records, the distribution became part of EMI Music Distribution (EMD). In 2011 the label was closed again.

In 2013 Universal Music revived the brand. Since then, the label has served as a label service and distributor for all types of music based in London and works closely with various independent labels around the world. The first release was Peter Gabriel's album And I'll Scratch Yours . The repertoire includes Korn , Yuck, Century Media , Metropolis and Welk Music Group. Caroline is also still active as a record label, with President Dominic Pandiscia and General Manager Mike Harris reviving the label as the North American sister company of distribution. Since the reopening, Underworld and Iggy Pop have released a joint album there. Other artists include Tracey Thorn , Prophets of Rage and Get Well Soon . In addition, remastered LPs by The Heptones , Toots & The Maytals and Jimmy Cliff or box sets by The Rubettes , April Wine and Bachman-Turner Overdrive have been released on the label.
