April Wine (2008)

April Wine is a Canadian rock band that has existed since 1969 with creative breaks and has gold and platinum status in Canada and the USA , but never achieved great fame in Europe . The group was always considered a tip in insider circles. The creative mind and band leader is the singer Myles Goodwyn from Montreal , who understood it in his compositions , catchy melodies (Goodwyn himself cites the Beatles as an influence) and heavy guitar riffs(sometimes the band played with three guitarists) to connect. Drummer Jerry Mercer , who has been a member of the band since the early 1970s and whose sound is particularly distinctive on the deep bass drums, made a not insignificant contribution to the success .

Career

Her albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s are essential contributions to the history of hard rock , such as Harder ... faster (1979). In addition to catchy original compositions, it contains an original adaptation of the Peter Sinfield / King Crimson classic 21st Century Schizoid Man .

In spite of this, or perhaps precisely because of this, the band cannot be seen as a pure hard rock group, as the melodic line is present throughout all of their compositions. This is also expressed in the band name, in the lyrics and the by no means hard rock outfit and appearance of the members. For example, The Whole World's Goin 'Crazy (1976) brings rather humorous nonsense rock with a hard guitar sound as well as very calm, soft sounds, the "Forever, For Now" published in 1977 is even one with two exceptions become a pure soft pop album.

Jim Clench died of lung cancer on November 3, 2010 in Montreal . He had been the band's bassist from 1970 to 1975 and from 1992 to 2006, and in the meantime had also played overdrive with Bachman-Turner .
