The German Diabetes Foundation (DDS) is a "charitable foundation under civil law" in the legal form of a registered association based in Düsseldorf , which is committed to the fight against diabetes mellitus .

The organization was founded in 1985 by the German Diabetes Society (DDG) and the German Diabetic Association (DDB). The main focus of the DDS is educating the population about prevention against diabetes mellitus and the metabolic syndrome. In addition to prevention, the organization is particularly concerned with pilot projects for optimized care and promotes scientific research and socio-medical projects with model character.

Volunteer members from the DDG and DDB work in the three organs of the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board. The organization finances its work from income from its assets, through donations and sponsoring from companies and from membership fees (sponsorship group of the DDS).

The organizations The Diabetic Child (DZK) and The Diabetic Heart Disease (DHD) deal with the concerns of two special patient groups . The Chance in Diabetes Foundation (MLD) advocates lifestyle changes for type 2 diabetics. In May 2009 the Juvenile Obesity Foundation was added to the DDS as the fourth foundation.

The foundation “Motivation for Lifestyle Change - Opportunity for Diabetes” has set itself the goal of developing and implementing activities for non-drug therapy for type II diabetes mellitus. "Ambassador" is the moderator Karl Moik.

The focus of the organization Juvenile Obesity is the fight against extreme obesity in adolescents in order to prevent diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. “Ambassadors” are the luge rider Georg “Schorsch” Hackl and the cook Gabi Kurz.
