The German Diabetic Association (DDB) is the oldest self-help organization for diabetics in Germany. The organization is a registered, non-profit association (eV) with a federal office in Berlin and 7 state and 5 regional associations. The German Diabetic Association acts nationwide in the interests of the patient, has a guardian and notary function that focuses on the patient's quality of life and care.

history

The association was founded in January 1931 in Berlin . Founder and first federal chairman Erich Otto Erdmenger also published a magazine under the title "Wir Zuckerkranken" and worked closely with Gerhardt Katsch , the medical director of the first German diabetic home in Garz on Rügen. Converted to the Führer principle in 1934, the German Diabetics Association was incorporated into the National Socialist German Health Association in 1942 by Reich Health Leader Leonardo Conti .

After it was re-established on January 1, 1951, the DDB was initially set up in a similarly centralized manner at the instigation of journalist Robert Beining; the DDB's 13 regional associations have only been legally independent since the 1970s, and have had a uniform national logo since 1998.

On June 1, 2012, the state associations of Bremen, Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia left the DDB and joined the German Diabetes Aid Association - People with Diabetes (DDH-M) as state associations. The Schleswig-Holstein regional association joined the German Diabetes Aid Association - People with Diabetes (DDH-M) on July 1, 2013 as the Northern State Association and terminated its membership in the DDB on December 31, 2013. The DDB continues to be represented throughout Germany with its state and regional associations. The German Diabetes Federation (DDF) was founded in 2016. a. from the DDB regional associations of Hesse, Thuringia and Baden-Württemberg. On December 31, 2016, the Lower Saxony regional association also left the DDB and joined the DDF.

requirements

  • improved training and further education for doctors and the official specialist title "diabetologist";
  • regular compulsory training at least every 2 years;
  • the complete documentation of treatment goals and results in the "Diabetes Health Passport";
  • more funding for research into the early diagnosis of diabetes mellitus;

Structures

At the beginning of 2002, the German Diabetic Association founded the German Diabetic Academy (DDA) as an internal training facility for its volunteer members. In addition to consolidating and deepening basic medical knowledge, the philosophy of the DDB is taught for practical work in a non-profit organization . The aim is to anchor a certificate as a moderator of the German Diabetics Association .

With the center for young diabetics in Lüdenscheid as the parent company and the children's and youth center "An der alten Glockengießerei" in Apolda , the Deutsche Diabetiker Bund eV, the main shareholder of the relief organization for young diabetics gGmbH, maintains two special inpatient facilities for children and young people with diabetes who cannot receive the necessary care in their family environment.

Memberships

The organization was a founding member of the national umbrella organization German Diabetes Union (DDU) and represented through this in the international association International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The DDU disbanded in 2008, so the representation at the IDF also ended. In 1985 she also founded the German Diabetes Foundation (DDS) in equal shares with the German Diabetes Society (DDG), the Association of Diabetes Doctors .

In 2010, in the Meiningen Declaration, a collaboration between diabetesDE and the DDB was agreed. The Federal Delegate Assembly decides against this cooperation in order to remain an independent representative of the patients.

The association is also part of the umbrella organizations of the Federal Working Group (BAG Selbsthilfe) for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses and their relatives, as well as the German Parity Welfare Association (DPWV).
