Faust is a German Krautrock band that was formed in Hamburg in 1970 when the members of two previous bands, Nukleus (consisting of Péron, Sosna and Wüsthoff) and Campylognatus Citelli (consisting of Diermaier, Irmler and Meifert) joined forces.

Band history

Jean-Hervé Péron

The initially unnamed group met the music journalist Uwe Nettelbeck , who got them a contract with the Polydor record company . Polydor set up a studio in an old village school in Wümme , into which the band moved with Nettelbeck and sound engineer Kurt Graupner . There the first two albums ( Faust and So Far ) as well as collaborations with Slapp Happy ( Sort Of , Acnalbasac Noom ) and Tony Conrad ( Outside the Dream Syndicate ) were created.

The first live performance in autumn 1971 turned into a spectacular happening due to technical problems; Meifert then left the band.

At the end of 1972, the band moved to England with Nettelbeck and Graupner, where they were signed to Richard Branson 's Virgin Records label . Shortly thereafter, The Faust Tapes was released and sold for the price of a single (49 pence) at the time. The high sales figures achieved as a result were not carried over to the subsequent Faust IV , and a fifth album remained unreleased. Then Wüsthoff left the band. Rudolf Sosna died in November 1996.

For the next 15 years it remained silent about the former band members; But there were several publications with recordings from the early days in Wümme as well as excerpts from the fifth album by Chris Cutler's Recommended Records .

Werner "Zappi" Diermaier

Péron, Diermaier and Irmler finally got together again in 1990 for a concert in Hamburg. In 1992 a sold out concert in London followed. Péron and Diermaier toured Europe and the USA in 1994. During their stay in the USA they were supported by Steven Wray Lobdell . A new album, Rien , was also created with this line-up .

Another album, You Know FaUSt , was recorded in Schiphorst in 1996. European tours followed. Péron left the France tour in June 1997, Irmler and Diermaier continue to work with various guest musicians. Further concerts, live albums, a setting of the Murnau classic Nosferatu and in 1999 a new album Ravvivando followed .

From 2002 the individual artists dedicated themselves to their solo projects: Pérons dada Events and Performances Art-Errorist , Diermaier's Offline Video Music processes sound and images, Irmler's Klangbad label and recording studio.

From May 2005 Diermaier, Péron, Amaury Cambuzat and Olivier Manchion (from the band Ulan Bator ) came together to create a new version of Faust , which made its debut at the Art-Errorist Avantgarde Festival in Schiphorst in autumn and has been successfully touring the world since then. Several published live and studio recordings were made with this line-up.

In April 2010 the formation around Hans-Joachim Irmler released a new double album on Klangbad. Jochen Irmler, Lars Paukstat, Steven W. Lobdell, Jan Fride and Michael Stoll are represented on “faust is last”.

The album "Something Dirty", released in January 2011, was created with the line-up of Diermaier / Peron / James Johnston (from the band Gallon Drunk ) and Geraldine Swayne. Faust has been performing live with this line-up since 2008. "The Faust Tapes" was included on The Wire's "100 Records That Set the World on Fire (While No One Was Listening)" list.
