The Rubettes are a band from England , founded in 1973 , whose greatest success was the 1974 single Sugar Baby Love .
Band history
Sugar Baby Love was the only number one hit in Germany and Great Britain and was the only title in the group to place in the USA. The song was originally sung by Paul da Vinci, who decided to pursue a solo career even before the title became a hit.
Numerous other Rubettes' top 10 hits followed across Europe, including Tonight , Juke Box Jive , I Can Do It and Foe-dee-oh-dee . Baby I know , a ballad in the country-rock style was, in 1977, the last top 10 hit in the UK.
The first six singles and three albums were produced by Wayne Bickerton and Tony Waddington, who worked with ex-Beatle Pete Best in the 1960s . Several tracks from the first three albums were also recorded by other artists and became chart successes, such as Way Back in the Fifties from the album Wear It's' at for Carl Wayne (formerly with The Move ) in 1975, Don't Do It Baby from the album We Can Do It and I'm Just Dreaming from the Rubettes album for Mac and Katie Kissoon in 1975 and 1976.
In 1976 the Rubettes broke away from the producer and composer duo Bickerton & Waddington and produced their singles and albums together with Alan Blakely (formerly with The Tremeloes ) themselves. This included an excursion into the genre of country rock with songs like Under One Roof , Baby I Know , Sometime in Oldchurch and Still Unwinding .
Comeback in the 1990s
In the 1990s some new albums and singles came out, including Riding on a Rainbow (1992), Making Love in the Rain (1995) and in France Smile (1994) and The Very Best of the Rubettes (1999). The latter combined the greatest successes from the 1970s together with new titles from the 1990s and was able to place itself in the top 10 of the charts in France.
