Matthew Moore Hardy (born September 23, 1974 in Cameron , North Carolina ) is an American wrestler who currently appears in the shows of All Elite Wrestling (AEW). He is best known by his ring name Matt Hardy .

At the beginning of his career he formed a tag team with his younger brother Jeff Hardy , which became known in the World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment (WWF / WWE) under the name The Hardy Boyz . His greatest successes include receiving the ECW Championship once and receiving the TNA World Heavyweight Championship twice .

Private life

Matthew Hardy is the son of Gilbert and Ruby Moore Hardy and the older brother of Jeff Hardy , who is also known as a wrestler . Matt Hardy founded and directed together with his brother Jeff the independent promotion OMEGA, from which some later well-known wrestlers such as Shannon Moore or Gregory Helms emerged . Hardy lived with ex-wrestler Amy Dumas for six years. Later he was still in a relationship with the former diva Ashley Massaro . Hardy has been in a relationship with wrestler Reby Sky since early 2010.

Wrestling career

Beginnings

His career largely coincides with that of Jeff. Both brothers' passion for wrestling was awakened in 1987 when they were given a trampoline . They now founded a fantasy wrestling promotion called Trampoline Wrestling Federation (TWF) and held fantasy fights in the garden of their parents' house under the self-chosen artist names Wolverine and High Voltage . A little later, the brothers began professional training and founded their own wrestling promotion, which was called East Coast Championship Wrestling (ECCW). From this league the OMEGA promotion developed a little later and Matt Hardy soon appeared in other independent leagues.

World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment (1998-2005)

WWF European Champion Matt Hardy with Lita and Jeff Hardy .

A little later, Jeff and Matt Hardy got into what was then WWF , where they worked as jobbers for a long time , before they achieved their breakthrough in 1999 with a feud against the team of Edge and Christian. The debut of the Tag Team Hardy Boyz came in 1999 at the King of the Ring . Conflicts followed, including against the Acolytes ( Bradshaw and Faarooq ) and the Dudley Boys . In total, the brothers were able to secure the WWE Tag Team title four times and the WCW Tag Team title and the WWE World Tag Team title once each .

In December 2001 attempts were made to separate the brothers within the storylines. The idea was dropped after a few weeks. The reason was allegedly jealousy about the mutual valet Lita , who became Matt's boyfriend in real life. In 2001 Hardy became WWE European Champion for a few weeks . In 2002 the team of brothers was finally broken up in the course of the WWE internal grate separation. Initially, both joined RAW before they fell out and split up within the storyline.

Hardy appeared in the summer of the same year at SmackDown and competed there in the Cruiserweight Division . In 2003 he was allowed to hold the WWE Cruiserweight title for several months .

Hardy's friend Amy Dumas was out for a year due to a real neck injury. On the occasion of their return to RAW in November 2003, the WWE writers developed a storyline between Dumas and Hardy. This was therefore moved back to RAW , where he first competed against Amy Dumas within the storyline and then later on to fight against Kane . The argument ended with a match and a defeat for Hardy at SummerSlam 2004. He suffered a knee injury which forced him to take a longer break.

During the recovery period, Amy Dumas separated from him and now officially entered into a liaison with Edge . Amy Dumas and Adam Copeland had been a couple for a long time and Hardy had a love triangle without even knowing it. After the official breakup, this love triangle was carried over into the WWE storyline. But in the middle of this storyline, Hardy was suddenly fired.

Ring of Honor Wrestling (2005)

Hardy made his Ring of Honor debut in 2005.

Return to WWE (2005-2010)

Matt Hardy as the WWE United States Championship in 2008.

At SummerSlam 2005 , he returned to WWE. He ultimately lost the argument against Edge and became SmackDown again ! offset. In the following time Hardy was involved in no major feuds and appeared with changing tag team partners.

The end of 2006 saw the reunification of the Hardy Boyz , which in the spring of 2007 brought another Tag Team title reign with it. This ended in June 2007 with the loss of the title to Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch .

As a single wrestler, Hardy vied for the United States title with MVP . In the wake of the feud with MVP, there was also a staged boxing match at the WWE Saturday Night's Main Event between him and former world boxing champion Evander Holyfield , who fought as a replacement for the MVP, who was suffering from heart problems. The match ended without a decision after an intervention by MVP.

At SmackDown! Ironically, on August 31, 2007, Hardy won the WWE Tag Team title from Deuce & Domino alongside MVP . Nevertheless, the feud with MVP was maintained, so both played various pranks on each other in the show, e.g. B. by setting matches for each other or competing in different sports such as basketball , chess or arm wrestling .

On November 13, 2007, Hardy and MVP lost the WWE Tag Team Title at SmackDown to The Miz and John Morrison . The rematch, which took place immediately after the actual match at the request of MVP, they lost because Hardy was forced to give up due to a leg injury caused by MVP.

A little later, Matthew Hardy cured an appendix injury for a few months before returning to a World Wrestling Entertainment house show on March 1 and attacking his former tag team partner and feuding opponent MVP.

At Wrestlemania 24 he prevented MVP from winning the Money in the Bank Ladder Match by attacking MVP . This led to a continuation of the feud between the two, which at Backlash (April 2008) included the change of the US title from MVP to Hardy.

On June 23, Hardy was allowed to switch to the ECW brand due to a cast change. At the major event The Great American Bash he lost a match against Shelton Benjamin and thus the title to him. A little later he led a short-term feud with Mark Henry and his newly introduced ECW Champion Belt.

On September 7, 2008, Hardy was allowed to win the ECW Championship at the Pay-Per-View Unforgiven in Cleveland ( Ohio ) after fighting Mark Henry , The Miz , Finlay and Chavo Guerrero in the first "ECW Championship Scramble" match of all time.

On January 13, 2009, he had to give back the ECW title to Jack Swagger. Hardy increasingly played the role of a villain by taking his brother Jeff Hardy for his title ( WWE Championship ) at the PPV Royal Rumble , within the storyline . He switched back to the SmackDown roster and feuded against his brother.

Matt led a feud against Jeff that he won after his win at WrestleMania 25 .

Hardy switched to RAW at the 2009 WWE Draft. During a match against Kofi Kingston and MVP, he tore an abdominal muscle and was sidelined for eight weeks. Nevertheless, he intervened on Judgment Day in a World Heavyweight Championship match between his brother Jeff and Edge and thus deprived him of the title.

On June 29, 2009, however, Matt was switched back to SmackDown in a trade. He became the crowd favorite again, to appear again with his brother as Team eXtreme against CM Punk , as Jeff left the WWE shortly afterwards.

In season 1 of WWE NXT , he was a pro for Justin Gabriel . He qualified on March 5, 2010 for the third time for the Money-in-the-Bank match at WrestleMania XXVI by defeating the then Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre according to the developed storyline . This was followed by a feud against the same.

On October 15, 2010, he was released due to his backstage behavior. Hardy previously tried everything to provoke this, as he was dissatisfied with his status in the company. A video that showed Rey Mysterio unmasked should have served as the final trigger .

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2011)

On January 9, 2011, Hardy made his debut on the pay-per-view show Genesis at Total Nonstop Action Wrestling as a mystery opponent of Rob van Dam and defeated him. He then became part of the Immortal group .

On June 21, 2011, Hardy was suspended. He was released on August 20, 2011. On September 1, 2011, Hardy stated in a YouTube video that he was ending his career as a full-time wrestler. He sparked a misunderstanding because the announcement was interpreted as a possible clue where he suicide would commit. This resulted in a police operation, but Matt Hardy apologized for this misunderstanding.

Return to ROH Wrestling (2012-2014)

On September 11, 2012, the Ring of Honor announced that Hardy was returning to graduate school. At the major event Death Before Dishonor X: State of Emergency, which took place on September 15, he challenged Adam Cole to a match for the ROH World Television Championship . They then vied for the ROH World Television Championship . On December 16, 2012 at the Final Battle 2012: Doomsday he was allowed to defeat Adam Cole. However, this was not a title match and Matt Hardy's hunt for the ROH World Television Championship was unsuccessful. On March 2, 2013, he joined the SCUM stable . Another match for the ROH Word Television Championship took place on April 5th against the reigning ROH World Television Champion Matt Taven, which however again ended in a defeat for Matt Hardy. On June 22, 2013 at Final Battle 2013 he defeated his former stable colleague Kevin Steen in a no disqualification match and thus secured a match for the ROH World Championship . In the following ROH edition he lost to the ROH World Champion Jay Briscoe. Then SCUM feuded against Team ROH. After various smaller arguments and numerous arguments, the final clash between ROH and SCUM in the Steel Cage Warfare took place on July 27, 2013. SCUM lost, with which the stable dissolved. On June 22nd, 2014 at Best in the World 2014 he founded the stable The Kingdom together with Michael Bennett and Maria Kanellis . On the same day, he and Michael Bennett were defeated by the Briscoes (Jay and Mark Briscoe) . In July 2014 Matt Hardy left ROH and the Stable The Kingdom and joined TNA.

Return to TNA Wrestling (2014-2017)

On July 24, 2014, Matt Hardy returned to TNA and re-teamed with his brother Jeff Hardy . They committed a feud against TNA World Tag Team Champions The Wolves ( Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards ) and Team 3D for the TNA World Tag Team Championship . TNA General Manager Kurt Angle announced a best of three series for the title. The Wolves won this series and thus defended their titles. Since the Wolves had to resign their title due to an injury to Eddie Edwards, a tournament for the vacant TNA World Tag Team Championship took place. The Hardys won the tournament, securing the TNA World Tag Team Championship for the first time . Jeff Hardy was injured on May 8, 2015 and the Hardys had to resign. On June 28, 2015 at Slammiversary , Matt Hardy took part in the King of the Mountain Match for the TNA King of the Mountain Championship . He couldn't get the title though.

He lost the title to Drew Galloway on March 15, 2016 .

After losing his title, he started a feud against Jeff Hardy. At the Impact Wrestling edition on April 19, 2016, an I Quit match between the two ended in a draw. After that match, he was written off the shows. On May 17, 2016, he returned with a new gimmick and went on to play as Broken Matt Hardy . He continued his feud against Jeff Hardy. On July 5, 2016, he defeated Jeff Hardy in the Final Deletion , which deprived Jeff Hardy of the right to use the Hardy name. Then Jeff Hardy appeared as Brother Nero.

With Brother Nero he finally formed the tag team The Broken Hardys . They committed a feud against Decay ( Abyss and Crazzy Steve). On October 2, 2016 at Bound for Glory , they won the TNA World Tag Team Championship from Decay . After successfully defending their titles against Decay, The Tribunal (Basile Baraka and Baron Dax), and DCC (Bram and Kingston ), the Broken Hardys embarked on a storyline in which they aim to win all the tag team titles in the world. In the course of the storyline, they won the Crash Tag Team Championship and MCW Tag Team Championship, among others .

On February 27, 2017, Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy announced that they had left TNA because they could not agree on a contract extension with the new owners of TNA.
