All Elite Wrestling ( AEW ) is an American wrestling - Promotion . The Jacksonville , Florida company was founded in 2019 by Tony Khan . The first Double or Nothing event took place on May 25, 2019 in Las Vegas , Nevada .

With the audience interest generated and the financial strength received by the Khan family , AEW is considered the first promotion in the United States since the World Championship Wrestling ( WCW ) was taken over by the World Wrestling Federation ( WWF ; today: WWE ) in 2001, which has the partial monopoly by WWE in question.

history

prehistory

Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer replied in May 2017 via Twitter to the question of whether the wrestling promotion Ring of Honor was able to sell over 10,000 tickets to an event: “Not anytime soon” (German: “Not in the near future "). Challenged by this statement, the then ring-of-honor wrestlers Cody Runnels and The Young Bucks (Matthew Massie and Nicholas Massie) planned their own wrestling event. This took place on September 1, 2018 in the Sears Center Arena in Hoffman Estates in northeast Chicago , Illinois under the title All In . The event, which featured top stars from various independent promotions , was advertised in advance under the slogan “The Biggest Independent Wrestling Show Ever” (German: “The biggest independent wrestling show of all time”) and was sold out within 30 minutes. All In was the first non- WWE or WCW- hosted wrestling event in the United States since 1993, with 11,263 spectators, and sold over 10,000 tickets. The event included matches for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship between title holder Nick Aldis and Runnels and for the ROH World Championship between Jay Lethal and Flip Gordon.

After the success of All In, the foundation of a promotion based on this event under the name All Elite Wrestling was announced on January 1, 2019 as part of the YouTube show Being The Elite produced by Matthew Massie and Nicholas Massie . At the same time, their first pay-per-view, Double or Nothing, was announced for spring 2019. AEW is financially supported by the US businessman Tony Khan , who also assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer , and his father, the billionaire Shahid Khan . On January 8, 2019, Cody Runnels, his wife Brandi Runnels and Matthew Massie and Nicholas Massie gave a first press conference in front of the stadium of the National Football League team Jacksonville Jaguars , which is owned by Shahid Khan. In addition to working with Oriental Wrestling Entertainment , it was announced that Double or Nothing would take place on May 25, 2019 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas , Nevada . Cody Runnels as well as Matthew Massie and Nicholas Massie took on positions in the AEW corporate management as Executive Vice Presidents . Brandi Runnels has been confirmed as Chief Brand Officer . On February 7, 2019, Tyson Smith, known as Kenny Omega, was introduced as fourth Executive Vice President. A partnership with the Mexican promotion Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide was announced.

The main event of the first Pay per View under the name Double or Nothing was a singles match that Chris Jericho won against Kenny Omega. The event generated the highest buy rate of any pay-per-view in wrestling that was not hosted by WWE or WCW. At All Out on August 31, 2019, the first AEW World Championship winner was determined in a singles match between Chris Jericho and Adam Page , which Jericho won. In addition, a women's and a tag team division was introduced from the start. The first AEW Women's World Championship title holder was Riho with a victory over Nyla Rose in the first edition of the weekly TV show AEW Dynamite on October 2, 2019. The AEW World Tag Team Championship was introduced with a tournament whose final SoCal Uncensored ( Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky ) won against The Lucha Brothers ( Rey Fenix and Pentagon Jr. ) in the Dynamite edition on October 30, 2019 . The introduction of a secondary title in the men's division followed in spring 2020 with the AEW TNT Championship . Cody became the first title holder on May 23, 2020 at Double or Nothing after the final of an opening tournament against Lance Archer .
