The AEW World Championship is the world championship of the US wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling . Introduced on May 25, 2019 by Bret Hart , the title is only given to male individual wrestlers of the AEW roster. As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .
On May 22, 2019, Jack Whitehall announced on AEW's YouTube channel that the Casino Battle Royale winner would compete against the winner of the main battle at Double or Nothing to determine the first AEW World Champion . The Battle Royale was won by Adam Page , while Chris Jericho defeated Kenny Omega in the main battle of Double or Nothing . At the same event, the WWE Hall of Famer unveiled the title belt to Bret Hart .
The match of the two was scheduled for All Out on August 31st as the main fight. Jericho defeated Page in the pay-per-view event and became the first wrestler to win the newly introduced title. The following day, Tallahassee police reported that Jericho's limousine had its title belt stolen. Jericho then initiated a "global investigation" on his Instagram account and on all AEW social media accounts. The belt was found on September 4th.
