The TIAA Bank Field is a football - stadium in the American city of Jacksonville in the state of Florida . It mainly serves as the venue for the Jacksonville Jaguars from the National Football League (NFL), but college football games such as the Gator Bowl (today: TaxSlayer Bowl ) also take place.
The stadium replaced the Gator Bowl Stadium, which stood in the same location. For special games, such as the Super Bowl , additional grandstands can be set up to expand the capacity to a maximum of 84,000 spectators.
Surname
The stadium opened in 1995 as Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. In 1997, the telecommunications company Alltel became the sports facility's name sponsor . After the contract expired, it reverted to the old name Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. In 2010 the financial services provider EverBank became the new name sponsor. In 2017 EverBank was taken over by the financial services provider TIAA . With the takeover, the home of the Jaguars has been known as TIAA Bank Field since 2018.
history
construction
TIAA Bank Field is in the Eastside neighborhood of Jacksonville, where the city's first permanent football stadium was built in 1928. The Fairfield Stadium was expanded in 1948 and in Stadium Gator Bowl renamed.
The current stadium was built with the help of some parts of the historic Gator Bowl stadium , these came from an extension from 1982. Construction began on January 3, 1994 and the new stadium opened on August 18, 1995 with a preseason game against the St. Louis Rams (10:27). The first official NFL game of the season was played by the Jaguars and the Houston Oilers (3:10) on September 3, 1995.
planning
In January 1993 negotiations began between the city and the offices of the University of Florida and University of Georgia over the college football game of the two universities, which had been held in Jacksonville since 1933. The Florida Citrus Bowl at the time offered a larger sum to bring the game to Orlando , Florida .
In response, Ed Austin, then mayor of Jacksonville, proposed a refurbishment of the Gator Bowl Stadium . Both universities had previously raised concerns about the condition of the old stadium and redevelopment was seen as key to convincing them to remain in Jacksonville. A new five-year contract was finally signed on March 23, 1993, and in May the city council provided US $ 49 million to renovate the Gator Bowl stadium .
NFL expansion
Shortly thereafter, investors wanted to bring a new National Football League team to Jacksonville and requested an additional $ 30 million from the city to renovate the stadium to make it more attractive to a professional team. After an agreement before the city council failed, the negotiations were later successful, so that a total of 121 million US dollars were made available.
In the end, the expanded loan and redevelopment program proved successful as Jacksonville was awarded the NFL's 30th franchise on November 30, 1993 with the Jacksonville Jaguars .
