Alltel was an American telecommunications company headquartered in Little Rock , Arkansas . It was active in both cellular and landline networks.

After Cingular , Verizon Wireless , Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile US , Alltel was temporarily the fifth largest wireless operator in the United States by customer numbers , but operated the largest network geographically. In contrast to these companies Alltel was after the acquisition of Western Wireless and Midwest Wireless in 2005 more rural areas of supply and business with national roaming concentrated. With the takeover of Western Wireless , Alltel also acquired the foreign Western Wireless subsidiaries.

The most valuable investment was the Austrian mobile operator tele.ring , which was sold to T-Mobile Austria for 1.3 billion euros . The other foreign companies have also been or will be sold.

2006 saw further acquisitions in Illinois , North and South Carolina .

In May 2007, Alltel was taken over by the financial investors TPG and Goldman Sachs .

On January 9, 2009, the FCC cleared Verizon Wireless' acquisition of Alltel. The last Alltel store closed its doors on October 16, 2009.

In 2016 the company was finally closed.
