MetroPCS was a US wireless operator based in Richardson , Texas . The company was founded in 1996 as "General Wireless" and had around 9 million customers in the US wireless communications market. As the fifth largest wireless operator in the United States, MetroPCS had sales of $ 4.8 billion in 2011. The popular smartphones from Apple , Samsung , HTC , LG and RIM were sold in their own branches and in large retail chains such as Best Buy and Walmart .

Merger with T-Mobile USA

On October 3, 2012, Deutsche Telekom announced the merger of T-Mobile US with the US wireless operator MetroPCS. Deutsche Telekom has a 74% stake in the joint venture , the former MetroPCS shareholders 26%. The transaction was completed at the end of April 2013 after approval by the responsible antitrust authorities. Since May 1, 2013 the new T-Mobile US Inc. has been operating on the market with the two brands T-Mobile and metroPCS. The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange . The previous President of metroPCS, Thomas C. Keys , became the new Vice President of T-Mobile USA and as such also COO of the metroPCS division within the merged company.
