The SDCCU stage (full name: San Diego County Credit Union Stadium ) is an American football - stadium in the US city of San Diego in the state of California . It served as the venue for American football games for the San Diego Chargers NFL team until the end of the 2016 NFL season . With the start of the 2017 season, the Chargers moved to the StubHub Center in Carson , Los Angeles County . The NCAA - college team the San Diego State Aztecs (San Diego State University) is currently based in the venue. In 2019, the San Diego Fleet football team from the Alliance of American Football (AAF) played their games at SDCCU Stadium.
history
In December 1965, construction began on the San Diego Stadium in the brutalist style . The stadium had a capacity of 50,000 when it opened. In 1980 the facility was renamed Jack Murphy Stadium in honor of the late sports journalist who initiated efforts to build the stadium. In several stages, the capacity was expanded to over 71,000 seats by the Super Bowl XXXII in 1998. In September 2017, the company became a San Diego County Credit Union name sponsor through 2018 for $ 500,000.
Events
Today the stadium is mostly used for American football. Between 1969 and 2003, the San Diego Padres baseball team also played at Qualcomm Stadium. There were also football tournaments, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the US Cup . The Mexican national soccer team has played several friendly matches here.
The Jehovah's Witnesses conduct their meetings regularly SDCCU stage by even Billy Graham has held several meetings from here.
future
With the departure of the Padres in 2003, there were some discussions about replacing the stadium with a modern, pure football stadium. The biggest problem, however, is that the city could not finance a new stadium.
