Ron Simmons (born May 15, 1958 in Perry , Georgia ) is a retired American wrestler . He is best known for his appearances in the two largest American wrestling leagues WCW and WWF / E . In addition, Simmons was a professional footballer in the National Football League and the Canadian Football League before his wrestling career .
Career
Beginnings
After finishing school, Simmons began studying at Florida State University , where he also played football. After graduating, he joined the National Football League and played for the Cleveland Browns . In the late 1980s, Simmons ended this career and turned to wrestling.
NWA / WCW (1986–1996)
Simmons appeared at the beginning of his career for several different wrestling leagues, but especially for the NWA and the WCW . Here he also celebrated his great successes. For example, he was the first African-American wrestler to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship title. With Butch Reed he also formed the successful Tag Team Doom and both won the NWA and WCW World Tag Team titles together. After the end of this era, Simmons accepted a contract offer from Vince McMahon in the mid-1990s and moved to WWF.
World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment (1996-2009)
In the summer of 1996 he made his debut alongside manager Sunny with the gladiator gimmick Faarooq Asad. A feud for the WWE Intercontinental Championship title against Ahmed Johnson (combined with a title match at Summerslam ) had to be canceled because of the latter's kidney injury. Simmons remained active in the action for the Intercontinental Champion title, but lost the tournament final for the vacant title against Marc Mero . A little later he parted with both the surname Asad and the Roman outfit and, fittingly, acquired a gimmick with Afro-American roots. In a dispute with Johnson, who was returning at the end of the year, he founded the Nation of Domination group (including Savio Vega and Crush ). A single match against Johnson at the Royal Rumble 1997 was lost as well as a street fight at Wrestlemania XIII at the side of his stable against Johnson and the Legion of Doom .
Subsequently, the group broke up in this formation. They freshened up the stable with new people ( The Rock , D-Lo Brown , Mark Henry ) and played matches against hostile stables over the course of the year. In the King of the Ring , Simmons lost a title match against Undertaker , in In your House - Badd Blood again an Intercontinental tournament final - this time against Owen Hart . When team member The Rock won the WWE Intercontinental Title in December 1997, Simmons was slowly pushed out of leadership. The final break came in 1998 at WrestleMania XIV and resulted in a title match on the May edition of In Your House , which Simmons lost. He spent the rest of the year as a noble jobber.
After the Undertaker's repeated gimmick deaths at the end of 1998, the latter recruited for his Ministry of Darkness a . a. also Simmons. Together with Bradshaw , he formed the tag team The Acolytes from then on and until the end of his WWE career . In their existence as a team, they have won the WWE World Tag Team Championship three times . At first as part of the ministry, they soon split off from it. As a single team they then feuded u. a. with the Hardy Boyz , the Dudley Boyz , the New Age Outlaws, and Edge & Christian .
From 2000 onwards, both started with a gimmick as bar thugs who offered their services as bodyguards for the Acolytes Protection Agency (APA). As part of the Brand Extension , the team was separated in 2002 and Simmons joined SmackDown! As a single wrestler . on. Just a year later, Bradshaw also switched to the Thursday program and the Acolytes were reunited. After feuding against the Basham Brothers and Team Angle , the Acolytes played their last match at Wrestlemania XX , a four-corner eliminator for the WWE Tag Team Title, which they lost. A little later the team was finally dissolved. Bradshaw got a push to become a World Heavyweight title contender as JBL, while Simmons was suspended from the WWE for alleged drinking problems.
At the 700th edition of Monday Night Raw, which took place on October 23, 2006, you could see him again after a long on-air abstinence at the side of John Cena. The fans in the hall greeted him with loud cheers while he played his most famous catchphrase "DAMN!" He then pulled himself back to the backstage area with a shake of his head and thunderous applause. This saying is now used as a running gag by WWE.
Later he was responsible for WWE as the so-called "Ambassador at large for Public Affairs" and in this position coordinates the public relations work in countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait or Iraq in order to inform the US military stationed there about the events in the WWE .
On January 13, 2009, he was fired from the WWE in the wake of cost savings. On April 1, 2012, Simmons was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame . On July 23, 2012, he and his former APA tag team partner Bradshaw made a guest appearance on the 1,000th edition of RAW.
