Günther Schifter

Günther "Howdy" Schifter (* 23. December 1923 in Vienna , † 11. August 2008 in Salzburg ) a living in Vienna was an Austrian journalist , actor and radio presenter .

Life

From 1949 to 2000 he worked for radio ( Rot-Weiß-Rot , ORF ) and became a radio legend in Austria through jazz, country music broadcasts (“Western Saloon”) and broadcasts on the history of popular music (“Shellac”) . In 1967 he came to Ö3 . With his memorable voice and his “history lessons” - he provided a humorous story for each year the titles were created and told of the day-to-day events of that time - “Howdy” was very popular with the audience. He retired in 1999. He himself had one of the largest record collections with 30,000 records of jazz and swing.

On August 11th, 2008 Günther Schifter died after a serious illness in the regional hospital in Salzburg. He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 79, row 41, number 9), and in 2013 he was dedicated in an honorary grave.

In 2011, the Schiftergasse in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him.

Günther Schifter's shellac collection is now in the Austrian Media Library .
