Paul Lloyd Jr. (born March 3, 1981 in Cape Town , South Africa ), better known by his ring name Justin Gabriel and PJ Black , is a South African wrestler . He was under contract with the WWE until January 2015 and appeared in their wrestling shows. He then switched to the television series Lucha Underground . His greatest achievement so far has been receiving the WWE Tag Team Championship three times
Wrestling career
Beginnings
Lloyd was trained by his father, Paul Lloyd Sr., a wrestler and promoter. Lloyd made his debut in 1997 as PJ Black at the age of 16. Together with Ray Leppan he formed the Tag Team Pure Juice .
In 2002 Lloyd went to Great Britain , where he trained at the FWA Academy under Alex Shane and Mark Sloan . In 2004 Lloyd made his debut in the FWA ( Frontier Wrestling Alliance ). Up until 2006, Lloyd appeared in various independent promotions in the United Kingdom (e.g. International Pro Wrestling United Kingdom ).
In 2006 he returned to South Africa and performed at WWP ( World Wrestling Professionals ). At WWP , Lloyd won his first title, the WWP World Cruiserweight Championship . His best-known feuds during his time in WWP were against Tornado , Dameon Herzog , Mikey Whiplash, and Joe E. Legend .
World Wrestling Entertainment (2008-2015)
Florida Championship Wrestling (2008-2010)
In 2008, Lloyd signed a development contract with WWE . Lloyd is the first South African wrestler in WWE history. In the WWE he was first used in Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), where he made his debut in the spring of 2009. At FCW, like in South Africa and Great Britain, he first appeared as PJ Black , then as Paul Lloyd and finally as Justin Angel .
The Nexus and The Corre (2010-2011)
On March 2, 2010 he made his debut on WWE TV under the name Justin Gabriel in the first season of the show WWE NXT , where he won his first match with his mentor Matt Hardy against Skip Sheffield and William Regal . Lloyd made it to the final, but was eliminated first, finishing third.
From June 7, 2010, Lloyd was part of the RAW roster and made his debut with all participants of the first season of NXT in the stable The Nexus , who intervened in the match between John Cena and CM Punk that same evening . In the course of this he became part of storylines that included a feud between Nexus and some WWE wrestlers, most notably John Cena. At the RAW edition on October 25, 2010, Lloyd and his stablemate Heath Slater won the WWE Tag Team Championship .
After Nexus leader Wade Barrett left the stable and CM Punk became the new leader, Lloyd and Heath Slater Barrett followed to SmackDown . There Lloyd formed the stable The Corre together with Wade Barrett, Heath Slater and Ezekiel Jackson until June 2011 .
On February 20, 2011, at the major Elimination Chamber event , Lloyd won the WWE Tag Team Championship for the second time with Heath Slater. The next day, however, they lost the title on Raw to John Cena and The Miz , but were able to regain the title a few moments later in a re-match. On April 19, 2011, they lost the title to Kane and The Big Show .
Final feuds and dismissal (2011-2015)
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported on January 24, 2015 that Lloyd had left WWE. WWE officially confirmed his release on January 25, 2015.
Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2015)
After his WWE career he became part of the GFW roster. He was part of the storyline between TNA and GFW when the GFW roster, led by Jeff Jarrett, tried to take over TNA. When Jeff Jarrett won the TNA King of the Mountain Championship in the course of the storyline and gave it up after 29 days on July 27, 2015, PJ Black won against Chris Masters , Eric Young , Lashley and Robbie E in a King of the Mountain Match and took the TNA King of the Mountain Championship . He lost the title a day later to Bobby Roode . It was also his last appearance on TNA, as the storyline was over for a few weeks. On October 10, 2015, he won a tournament and was crowned the first GFW NEXGEN Champion. He lost the GFW NEXGEN Championship to Sonjay Dutt on November 27, 2015.
