Kevin Yanick Steen (born May 7, 1984 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu , Québec ) is a Canadian wrestler . He is currently under contract as Kevin Owens with the WWE and appears there on Raw . His greatest achievement so far is receiving the Universal Championship .

Private life

Steen was born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and grew up in the nearby village of Marieville. He was trained by Jacques Rougeau , Pierre Carl Ouellet and Serge Jodoin.

Wrestling career

Independent Leagues (2000-2014)

On May 7, 2000, he made his debut in the doctorate of Jacques Rougeau.

On February 6, 2004 , Steen won his first title, the EEA title . On September 11, 2004, he appeared for the first time in the USA , at Combat Zone Wrestling (CZW for short). This was followed by engagements at various independent promotions in the USA (e.g. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla , IWA Mid-South or Jersey All Pro Wrestling ) and in Canada (e.g. International Wrestling Syndicate ). On August 6, 2005 won Steen at Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG briefly) the PWG Championship of AJ Styles . At CZW Steen won the CZW Iron Man Championship on August 13, 2005 . In May 2006 he appeared at the German wrestling promotion Westside Xtreme Wrestling . In October and November 2006 he performed at Dragon Gate in Japan . In Pro Wrestling Guerrilla , Steen and Generico won the PWG World Tag Team Championship from PAC and Roderick Strong . In April 2008 , Steen feuded against Nigel McGuinness .

Ring of Honor (2007-2014)

Steen had his first appearance at Ring of Honor (ROH for short) in February 2007. At ROH he formed a tag team with El Generico . With Generico he feuded against the Briscoes (Jay and Mark Briscoe).

On September 19, 2008 , Steen won the ROH World Tag Team Championship with El Generico from Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black . They passed the title on April 10, 2009 to Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards . In December 2009, Steen began a feud with Steve Corino against his longtime partner El Generico and Colt Cabana . The feud ended in one match, at ROH Final Battle 2010, which El Generico won.

World Wrestling Entertainment (since 2014)

NXT Champion (2014-2015)

On August 12, 2014, Steen signed a contract with the WWE. After training in their performance center, he made his debut in the WWE Development League NXT on December 11, 2014 as Kevin Owens at the NXT TakeOver: R Evolution event . The ring name Kevin Owens pays homage to wrestler Owen Hart , who died in 1999 during a WWE PPV and was Steen's great role model. At this event he was able to defeat CJ Parker in his debut match. On the same day he attacked Sami Zayn , his former tag team partner from the independent scene. This attack was followed by a feud against Sami Zayn for the NXT Championship . On February 11, 2015, he received the NXT Championship from Sami Zayn at the NXT Takeover IV: Rival event . He lost the title on July 4, 2015, a house show in Tokyo at Finn Balor . The rematch for the NXT Championship took place on August 22, 2015 at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn . This was also a ladder match that Steen lost. It was also his last match on NXT.

Feud against John Cena and Universal Champion (2015-2017)

On the May 18, 2015 Raw episode, Steen made his first prominent appearance on the WWE main roaster with an attack on John Cena . On September 20, Steen won the WWE Intercontinental Championship by Ryback at the event Night of Champions. On December 13, 2015, he lost the WWE Intercontinental Championship at the major event WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs to Dean Ambrose . On February 15, 2016 at a RAW edition, he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the second time by pinning Tyler Breeze in a Fatal Five Way Match that also featured champion Dean Ambrose, Dolph Ziggler and Stardust . He lost this at Wrestlemania 32 on April 4, 2016, in a ladder match to Zack Ryder .

At the WWE Draft 2016 , which took place on July 19, 2016 at SmackDown , Owens was drafted to the raw roster and has been part of the raw roster ever since. At the August 29, 2016 Raw edition, Owens defeated Big Cass , Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns for the vacant WWE Universal Championship in a Fatal Four Way Elimination Match . At Survivor Series he was part of the raw team, but they lost to the team from SmackDown . With Chris Jericho he formed the Jeri-Ko team. With Chris Jericho as a partner, he competed for the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship several times without success . On the January 9, 2017 edition of Raw, he and Chris Jericho defeated WWE United States Champion Roman Reigns in a handicap match . With this win he helped his tag team partner Chris win the WWE United States Championship. On the February 13, 2017 edition of Raw, he broke up with Chris Jericho by attacking him.

On March 5, 2017, at the major Fastlane event , he lost his WWE Universal Championship to Goldberg .

United States Champion and Injury (2017-2018)

Owens accepted Chris Jericho's challenge for a match at WrestleMania 33 as long as Jericho defended the WWE United States Championship, which Owens would then win for the first time in his career. As part of the Superstar Shake-Up, he switched to the SmackDown Brand on April 11, 2017 . Owens lost the WWE United States Championship to AJ Styles during a house show at Madison Square Garden on July 7th . At Battleground , Owens defeated Styles in a rematch to claim the WWE United States Championship for a third time. He lost the title but two days later at SmackDown in a Triple Threat Match , which also included the returning Chris Jericho. On the September 5 episode of SmackDown , Owens called for another match for the WWE United States Championship. When the SmackDown Commissioner Shane refused, he insulted Shane's children, resulting in him attacking Owens. As a result, Shane was suspended and Daniel Bryan announced that Mr. McMahon would be returning to SmackDown the following week . On the Sept. 12 episode of SmackDown , McMahon announced that Owens would face Shane in a Hell In A Cell match at Hell in a Cell . Owens shook hands with McMahon and took the opportunity to attack him. At Hell in a Cell, Owens defeated Shane after Sami Zayn intervened in the match. On the following episode of SmackDown , Zayn called Owens his "brother" after revealing why he was helping Owens instead of allowing Shane to win.

In the March 20 episode of SmackDown , Owens and Sami Zayn (Kaybabe) were fired by Daniel Bryan as punishment for attacking Shane McMahon the week before. Owens and Zayn attacked Bryan after the announcement. That led to a tag team match at WrestleMania 34 . If Owens and Zayn won this match, they would be back under contract with SmackDown . Owens and Zayn lost the match and had to leave SmackDown for good.

He switched back to RAW at the Superstar Shake-Up in April 2018 . And this together with his partner Zayn, both of whom played various tag team matches over time, but were never involved in the title event. On a Raw edition, however, Zayn did gymnastics against Owens by attacking him, a feud between the two ensued, which Owens was the winner. During this time Owens injured his knee, which is why he had to undergo an operation on both knees and was therefore injured.

Return and Face-Turn (since 2019)

After his injury break, Owens returned to SmackDown on February 26, 2019 and got a WWE Championship match from Mr. Mahon against then champion Daniel Bryan , which he lost. At the SmackDown edition on April 23, 2019, he finally turned to heel by attacking WWE Champion Kofi Kingston after he won a match against Shinsuke Nakamura by disqualification. This led to a feud between Owens and Kofi Kingston, which resulted in a match for Kingston's WWE Championship at Money in the Bank , but Owens lost that match. On June 23, 2019 Owens played a tag team match with Sami Zayn against Big E & Xavier Woods , which they won. After a short time he did gymnastics to the face. On July 14, 2019, he won a singles match against Dolph Ziggler at Extreme Rules after just 20 seconds. On August 11, 2019, he won a singles match against Shane McMahon at WWE SummerSlam . At the September 24th edition of Smackdown, Kevin Owens challenged Shane McMahon to a ladder match for the future of the two. On October 4, 2019 Owens won the ladder match against McMahon at WWE Friday Night SmackDown , after this defeat McMahon had to leave the WWE according to the storyline. Owens moved from SmackDown to Raw on October 11, 2019 as part of the WWE Draft .

On November 23, 2019, he and Keith Lee, Dominik Dijakovic and Tommaso Ciampa played a War Games match against The Undisputed ERA Adam Cole , Kyle O'Reilly , Roderick Strong and Bobby Fish on NXT TakeOver: WarGames III . He won that match. On November 24, 2019, he played a Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match against Braun Strowman , Roman Reigns , Mustafa Ali, King Corbin , Shorty G. , Damian Priest, Matt at the WWE Survivor Series together with Drew McIntyre , Ricochet , Seth Rollins and Randy Orton Riddle, Keith Lee, WALTER and Tommaso Ciampa. He lost that match.
