Shinsuke Nakamura ( Japanese 中 邑 真 輔 , Nakamura Shinsuke ; born February 24, 1980 in Kyōtango , Kyōto , Japan ) is a Japanese wrestler currently under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment and performing at SmackDown . Nakamura is a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion as well as WWE Intercontinental Champion and WWE United States Champion .

Wrestling career

New Japan Pro Wrestling (2002-2016)

He began his career with the Japanese wrestling promotion New Japan Pro Wrestling . He played his first match on August 29, 2002 against Tadao Yasuda, which he also lost. He feuded against the IWGP Heavyweight Champion Hiroyoshi Tenzan. On December 9, 2003, he defeated Hiroyoshi Tenzan and won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship for the first time . On January 4, 2004, he defeated Yoshihiro Takayama and won the NWF Heavyweight Championship and united the IWGP Heavyweight Championship with the NWF Heavyweight Championship . On February 15, 2004, he had to give up the IWGP Heavyweight Championship due to a serious facial injury, which he sustained in an MMA fight against Alexei Ignashov on December 31, 2003.

On December 11, 2004 he defeated together with Hiroshi Tanahashi Kensuke Sasaki and Minoru Suzuki to win the vacant IWGP Tag Team Championship . They lost the title on October 30, 2005 to Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Masahiro Chono. On January 4, 2005, he defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi and got the IWGP U-30 Openweight Champion . He gave up the title on May 1, 2005 voluntarily.

In 2006 he feuded against Brock Lesnar for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship . He couldn't get the title though. On January 4, 2008, he defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi and won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship for the second time . He lost the title on April 27, 2008 to Keiji Muto . On February 17, 2008, he defeated Kurt Angle and won the IWGP Third Belt Championship . This title came about when NJPW stripped Brock Lesnar from the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in mid-July 2006 . Brock Lesnar then left his doctorate. Since Brock Lesnar continued to see himself as the rightful champion, he went to Anonio Inoki's newly created IGF with the title. After Shinsuke Nakamura won the title from Kurt Angle, he combined the IWGP Heavyweight Championship with the IWGP Third Belt Championship . After Hiroshi Tanahashi won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship , he feuded against him for the title. Hiroshi Tanahashi suffered an injury, which is why he had to give up the title, which put the feud over. On September 27, 2009 he defeated Togi Makabe in a decisive match and thus won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship for the third time . He then feuded against Togi Makabe for the title. On May 3, 2010 he lost the title to Togi Makabe.

On July 22, 2012, he defeated Hirooki Goto and secured the IWGP Intercontinental Championship for the first time . He lost the title on May 31, 2013 to La Sombra . On July 20, 2013, he defeated La Sombra and took back the IWGP Intercontinental Championship . He feuded again against his old rival Hiroshi Tanahashi, who took the title from him on January 4, 2014. On April 6, 2014, he defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi and took the title back. On June 21, 2014, he lost his title to Bad Luck Fale. He won the IWGP Intercontinental Championship back on September 21, 2014. On May 3, 2015, he lost the title to Hirooki Goto. On September 27, 2015, he defeated Hirooki Goto and won the IWGP Intercontinental Championship for the fifth time . In November 2015, he was challenged to a title match by AJ Styles . Since AJ Styles was injured, the title match did not take place until January 4, 2016. At NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 10, he successfully defended his title against AJ Styles. On January 25, 2016, due to his contract that expired at the end of January, he returned the IWGP Intercontinental Championship at a press conference, which declared the title vacant. He played his last match for NJPW on January 30, 2016 together with Kazuchika Okada and Tomohiro Ishii, with whom he formed the stable CHAOS . They defeated Hirooki Goto, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Katsuyori Shibata. On the same day he left the stable and New Japan Pro Wrestling.

World Wrestling Entertainment (since 2016)

NXT Champion (2016-2017)

On January 28, 2016, WWE announced that Shinsuke Nakamura had signed a contract. On the same day it was announced that Nakamura would make his debut in WWE's Development League , NXT . Nakamura made his ring debut at the NXT TakeOver: Dallas event on April 1, 2016 with a win against Sami Zayn . In the following weeks he played several matches at NXT against, among others, Tye Dillinger , Elias Samson and Alex Riley. In the April 28th edition of NXT, he defeated Austin Aries as tag team Blake and Murphy. He then started a feud against Aries, which culminated in a match at the special event NXT Takeover: The End on June 8th, which Nakamura was able to win. In the June 15 issue of NXT, he interrupted Finn Bálor and challenged him to a match, which Bálor accepted. On June 29, Nakamura had his first match in the WWE main squad at a live event in Honolulu, defeating Kevin Owens . At another live event on July 1st in Tokyo, he was allowed to defeat Chris Jericho . On August 20, 2016 at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn II , Nakamura defeated the previous title holder Samoa Joe and thus won the NXT Championship . On November 19, 2016 at NXT TakeOver: Toronto , he lost the title again to Samoa Joe, which was also his first loss on WWE TV. On December 3rd, Nakamura was able to win the title back from Samoa Joe in a houseshow in Japan. On January 28, 2017, he lost the title on NXT TakeOver: San Antonio to Bobby Roode . This match was his last appearance on NXT.

Royal Rumble Victory and United States Champion (2017-2019)

In the April 4, 2017 issue of SmackDown Live , Nakamura made his debut in the main squad on SmackDown, during which he interrupted a promo for The Miz . After the show, he defeated Dolph Ziggler in a dark match. In the August 1, 2017 edition of SmackDown Live , he won a main challenger match against John Cena for a title bout against reigning WWE Champion Jinder Mahal at WWE SummerSlam 2017. At SummerSlam, however, he lost to Jinder Mahal.

On January 28, 2018, he won the Royal Rumble . Immediately thereafter, Nakamura announced that he would challenge AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 34 . Nakamura lost that fight.

On July 15, 2018, Nakamura won the WWE United States Championship against Jeff Hardy for the first time . This reign lasted 156 days after losing the title to Rusev on December 18, 2018 . However, Nakamura was able to regain the title on January 27, 2019 by defeating Rusev at the Royal Rumble 2019 . However, Nakamura lost the title to R-Truth after just 2 days at SmackDown on January 29, 2019 .

SmackDown and Intercontinental Champion (since 2019)

After his title run as a singles wrestler, he then formed a tag team with Rusev and were also involved in the title event for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship , but they never managed to secure the title. On July 14, 2019, Nakamura won the WWE Intercontinental Championship at Extreme Rules after defeating Finn Bálor . On November 24, 2019, he played a Triple Threat Match against AJ Styles and Roderick Strong at WWE Survivor Series , which he lost. On January 31, 2020, he lost his title after 201 days of reign to Braun Strowman on an edition of SmackDown . In July 2020 he founded a team with Cesaro . Together they won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship from The New Day Kofi Kingston & Big E on July 19, 2020 .
