NXT Takeover: San Antonio was a wrestling event of WWE NXT , which on the WWE Network aired. It was held on January 28, 2017 at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio , Texas , United States . It was the 14th hosting of a major NXT event under the name NXT TakeOver since February 2014. For the first time one of them took place in San Antonio and thus also in the Freeman Coliseum and for the second time after NXT TakeOver: Dallas on April 1st, 2016 in Texas instead of.

In the run-up to the event, five matches were scheduled. This resulted from the storylines that in the weeks before NXT Takeover: San Antonio at NXT , the weekly WWE Network broadcast developmental league of the WWE were shown. The main fight was a singles match for the NXT Championship between the title holder Shinsuke Nakamura and his challenger Bobby Roode .

In the pre-show of the event, the winners of the 2016 NXT Awards, which were determined in the weeks before by an online vote of the supporters of the WWE, were announced. There were five different categories:
- Rookie of the Year ( NXT Breakout Star of the Year ): Billie Kay and Peyton Royce ;

- Tag Team of the Year ( NXT Tag Team of the Year ): The Revival ( Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson );

- Wrestler of the Year ( NXT Male Competitor of the Year ): Shinsuke Nakamura .

- The Authors Of Pain ( Akam & Rezar ) defeated #DIY ( Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa ) in a tag team match for the NXT Tag Team Championship ;
- Bobby Roode defeated Shinsuke Nakamura in a singles match and received the NXT Championship .
- A total of four matches were recorded prior to the actual event, three of which were broadcast on WWE NXT on February 1, 2017 .
- After the match for the NXT Tag Team Championship , Seth Rollins , who actually belonged to the Raw roster and thus the main roster of the WWE , appeared in the ring for his rival there, Triple H , who is also the EVP and producer of the WWE in control of the show had to confront.
