WWE Hell in a Cell 2017 was a WWE wrestling event that aired as pay-per-view and on the WWE Network . It took place on October 8, 2017 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit , Michigan , United States . It was the ninth edition of Hell in a Cell since the premiere in 2009. For the first time, the event was held in the US state of Michigan.
background
In the run-up to the event, eight matches were scheduled, one of which was for the pre-show . These resulted from the storylines shown in the weeks leading up to Backlash on SmackDown Live , one of WWE's weekly shows.
Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin versus The Hype Bros
After Jason Jordan switched to Raw to start a storyline with Kurt Angle , the American Alpha tag team that Jordan formed with Chad Gable was split up. On August 22, 2017, Shelton Benjamin, returning to WWE, was introduced as Gables' new partner. He was last active for the WWE in 2010, a return planned since August 2016 failed due to a real shoulder injury by Benjamin.
On August 29, 2017, Benjamin and Gable played their first match together, defeating The Ascension ( Konnor and Viktor ). Another win against The Hype Bros ( Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder ) followed on September 12, 2017 . After this match there was a handshake between Rawley, Benjamin and Gable, but Ryder refused. On October 3rd, 2017 it was announced that there will be a rematch of the two teams in the pre-show of Hell in a Cell .
The New Day versus The Usos
At SummerSlam on August 20, 2017, The Usos (consisting of Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso ) won the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship from The New Day ( Big E and Xavier Woods with Kofi Kingston ). On September 12, 2017, there was a rematch between the two teams at SmackDown Live in the form of a street fight in which The New Day recaptured the title.
A week later another final title match between the two teams for Hell in a Cell was announced. On September 26, 2017, the match was turned into a Hell-in-a-Cell match . On October 3, 2017, there was a verbal duel between the two teams.
Randy Orton versus Rusev
Also at SummerSlam allowed Randy Orton his rival Rusev defeat within ten seconds. On September 19, 2017, there was a rematch between the two at SmackDown Live, in which Rusev defeated Orton within a very short time. Orton himself had already played a - successful - match against Aiden English on the same evening .
On September 26, 2017, Rusev and English celebrated this victory over Orton, after which they were attacked by this. Therefore, another match between Orton and Rusev was scheduled for Hell in a Cell . In the final SmackDown Live episode before Hell in a Cell , Orton defeated Aiden English.
AJ Styles, Baron Corbin and Tye Dillinger in a triple threat match
After his feud with Kevin Owens ended , AJ Styles , winner of the WWE United States Championship , presented an Open Challenge to all members of the roster who wanted to compete for his title on SmackDown Live on August 29, 2017 . This was answered by Tye Dillinger , to the disadvantage of Baron Corbin , who also wanted to accept the challenge. After the match he launched an attack against Dillinger, but was repelled by the victorious Styles.
The following week, Corbin defeated Dillinger in an individual match. On September 12, 2017 there was another title match between Styles and Dillinger. Corbin wanted to intervene, but Styles prevented it with a phenomenal forearm and then won the match. After the match, Corbin attacked both participants. The following week there was to be a match between Styles and Corbin for the title, but this did not materialize due to an attack by Corbin on his opponent and by Dillinger on Corbin himself.
On September 26, 2017, a match for the title between Styles and Corbin was scheduled at Hell in a Cell . In the final SmackDown Live edition before the event, Dillinger defeated Corbin in another individual match. For the title match, Dillinger was only added to Hell in a Cell himself.
Natalya versus Charlotte Flair
After Natalya had taken the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship from her opponent Naomi at SummerSlam and defended the title in a rematch against them at the edition of SmackDown Live on September 12, 2017, she interrupted Charlotte Flair, who returned after a break, the following week . Flair immediately challenged her to a title match, but initially a fatal four-way match between her, Becky Lynch , Naomi and Tamina was scheduled to determine a challenger for the title at Hell in a Cell . That match won Flair.
Charlotte Flair was allowed to defeat Carmella in a single match on September 26, 2017 , after which she was confronted and provoked by Natalya. A week later, Carmella and Natalya competed on one side against Flair and Becky Lynch on the other. Natalya forced Flair to give up in her Sharpshooter .
Jinder Mahal versus Shinsuke Nakamura
At SummerSlam on August 20, 2017, Jinder Mahal defeated his rival Shinsuke Nakamura and successfully defended his WWE Championship after Mahal's allies The Singh Brothers ( Samir Singh and Sunil Singh ) intervened in the match in his favor. On the following episode of SmackDown Live two days later, Nakamura won a 2v1 handicap match against them. He was then attacked by Mahal, which he was able to fend off.
In the August 29, 2017 issue, Nakamura and Randy defeated Orton Mahal and Rusev in a tag team match . After the match, Orton attacked his partner and a match between him and Nakamura was scheduled for the following week, the winner of which should challenge the title holder Mahal at Hell in a Cell for the WWE Championship . Nakamura also won this match. Over the next two weeks, Mahal and The Singh Brothers made fun of Nakamura and his appearance several times, to which Nakamura replied that no one would laugh anymore if he won the WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell .
On September 26, 2017, Nakamura attacked his rival and his allies. In the following week he was attacked again by them.
Dolph Ziggler versus Bobby Roode
Dolph Ziggler mimicked other wrestlers' entries on SmackDown Live for several weeks . The background was that Ziggler in his role as Heel wanted to show the audience that they would be more interested in special entries than good performances in the ring, and that he was the best wrestler in the WWE. On September 26, 2017, he was confronted by Bobby Roode , who made his debut in the main roaster , who challenged Ziggler to a match at Hell in a Cell , which he accepted.
On October 3, 2017, after Roode defeated Mike Kanellis , Ziggler came out, congratulating Roode on the victory, but at the same time stated that Roode was all show and that he would prove it at Hell in a Cell .
Kevin Owens versus Shane McMahon
At SummerSlam who took Commissioner of Smackdown Live Shane McMahon in a match to the States Championship WWE United between champions AJ Styles and his challenger Kevin Owens , the role of the Special Referee . During the match, the frustrated Owens attacked McMahon, who resisted and allowed Styles to defend his title. On the following edition of SmackDown Live, Owens was given one last chance to win the title and was also allowed to choose a referee. He chose Baron Corbin . During the match, however, this left the ring, so that McMahon took over this task himself again. Styles took advantage of it again this time and defeated Owens.
Two weeks later, McMahon attacked Owens after he - despite warning - talked badly about his children. For this reason, McMahon was suspended from the storyline by order of chairman Vince McMahon , who was also his father. Another week later, Vince McMahon scheduled a Hell-in-a-Cell match between his son and Owens at the event of the same name. He was then attacked by Owens. In the following weeks there were multiple confrontations between the two.
On September 26, 2017 Owens met his arch-rival Sami Zayn in a match , which he won after an apron powerbomb by a referee. Subsequently, after Owens made further attacks on Zayn, McMahon came to the aid of the latter. In the final episode before Hell in a Cell , Shane McMahon added a falls-count-anywhere stipulation to his match against Owens . He was then attacked again by Owens.

Also in the pre-show, Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin met The Hype Bros ( Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder ). In the end, after a failed attempt to show the Ryder hype to Benjamin, Ryder and Rawley discussed how their opponents were taking an advantage and a combination of blockbuster (Gable) and sit-out powerbomb (Benjamin) showed them what the win brought in.
Pay-per-view
The pay-per-view was won with the Hell-in-a-Cell match for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship between The Usos ( Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso ) and the title winners The New Day (consisting of Big E and Xavier Woods , Kofi Kingston did not take part directly in the match, but stood outside the cage) opened. In the end, The Usos showed a double Samoan Splash against Woods, and won the title for the third time. It was the first time in WWE history that tag team titles had been contested at Hell in a Cell.
Next, Randy Orton met Rusev . Orton won by pinfall after the RKO . AJ Styles then defended his WWE United States Championship in a triple threat match against Baron Corbin and Tye Dillinger . After Styles showed a phenomenal forearm against Dillinger, Corbin kicked him out of the ring, pinned Dillinger and won the title.
Then again it came to the match for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship between Natalya and Charlotte Flair . Flair won by disqualification after Natalya used chairs as a weapon against her, but this kept the title with her.
Jinder Mahal later defended the WWE Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura . After an intervention by The Singh Brother ( Samir Singh and Sunil Singh ) they were expelled from the hall by the referee . Even so, Mahal was ultimately able to defeat Nakamura. In the next match, Bobby Roode defeated his opponent Dolph Ziggler by pinfall after a forbidden grip on Ziggler's pants. After the match he was attacked with a zig zag .
Main Event
In the main event of the event, Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon faced each other in a falls-count-anywhere - hell-in-a-cell match . Even before Owens could get into the ring, McMahon attacked him. Both then climbed into the cage, which was closed.
In the further course of the match, the two broke through an outer wall of the cage and climbed onto the roof, where they continued their match. Owens subsequently tried to escape by climbing back down the cage, but was followed by McMahon. Owens then fell from about halfway up the cage through one of the commentary desks on the cage. Then McMahon placed his opponent on another commentator's desk and wanted to show a leap of faith , a jump from the roof of the cage on his opponent. However, this was prevented by Sami Zayn , who pulled Owens from the desk at the last moment, which is why McMahon himself fell through this. In the end, Zayn, who was turned into a heel, helped his former rival Owens to victory.
After the event
In the SmackDown Live episode that followed Hell in a Cell , Kevin Owens thanked Sami Zayn for his help. Zayn explained his actions by saying that he had been tired of it since he switched to the “Land of Opportunity” ( German: “Land of Opportunities”), but had never received his opportunities. He understands that Commissioner Shane McMahon is a very busy person, but he realized that he only cares about himself and therefore he helped Owens. He assured that Owens had always remained his "brother" throughout their previous friendship and their later fierce rivalry. Finally, he thanked Owens.
There was also a verbal encounter between The Usos ( Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso ) and The New Day ( Big E , Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods ), in which both teams expressed mutual respect. They were interrupted by The Ascension ( Konnor and Viktor ), Breezango ( Fandango and Tyler Breeze ), The Hype Bros ( Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder ) and the team of Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin , with a fatal four between them -Way match was scheduled for Gable and Benjamin to win, becoming new challengers to The Usos' WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship .
The winner of the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship Natalya was first confronted by Tamina , Lana and Carmella and then attacked by Charlotte Flair . Becky Lynch and Naomi came to Flair's aid before the attack was stopped by some referees.
That same evening, Shinsuke Nakamura and Randy Orton defeated Rusev and Aiden English in a tag team match . In addition, AJ Styles lost a rematch against Baron Corbin for the WWE United States Championship .
On October 17, 2017, there was a rematch between Dolph Ziggler and Bobby Roode , which Ziggler won in a similarly unfair way as Roode won in Hell in a Cell . Jinder Mahal , title holder of the WWE Championship , claimed his counterpart at Raw , the carrier of the WWE Universal Championship Brock Lesnar to a match at the Survivor Series on November 19, 2017 out.
