background

In the run-up to the event, eight matches were scheduled, one of which was for the pre-show . These resulted from the storylines shown in the weeks leading up to Backlash on SmackDown Live , one of WWE's weekly shows.

Tye Dillinger versus Aiden English

On May 21, 2017, Tye Dillinger , who had been promoted from the NXT development league to the main roaster to SmackDown Live just a few weeks earlier , won an individual match against Aiden English at Backlash . A rematch between the two has been scheduled for Battleground .

The Usos versus The New Day

The Usos as carriers of the WWE Tag Team Championship in the year, 2014.

At Money in the Bank on June 18, 2017, The New Day ( Big E and Kofi Kingston with Xavier Woods ) defeated the titleholders The Usos ( Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso ) by counting in a match for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship , making The Usos retained the title. In the following issue of SmackDown Live, The New Day set out how The Usos escaped the match. Big E also defeated Jimmy Uso in an individual match.

A week later, after The Usos defeated the Hype Bros ( Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder ) team and prevented them from becoming the new challengers to the titles, they were confronted by The New Day and into another match for the titles challenged what The Usos accepted at Battleground .

In the July 4, 2017 issue, there was a rap battle between The New Day and The Usos, which was led by Wale . The New Day won after being physically attacked by The Usos. In the next two weeks there were several individual matches between the individual members of the teams, in which Woods was allowed to win against Jey and Jimmy against Kofi Kingston.

Baron Corbin versus Shinsuke Nakamura

Also at Money in the Bank , Shinsuke Nakamura was attacked by Baron Corbin during his entry into the Money-in-the-Bank ladder match , which put Nakamura out of action for much of the match; Corbin won the match and thus received a contract for a match for the WWE Championship . In the June 27, 2017 issue of SmackDown, Corbin defeated his previous rival Sami Zayn in an individual match . When asked by Dasha Fuentes in an interview on the same show whether Nakamura wanted to play an individual match against Corbin, the latter replied that while Corbin was dangerous, he was also afraid of him. The following week, Corbin attacked Nakamura during another backstage interview, telling him that he was not afraid of him.

As a result, a match between the two was scheduled for the episode on July 11th. This did not take place, however, because both attacked each other before the start of the match, which is why the match for Battleground was rescheduled. On July 18, 2017, there was a tag team match between Nakamura and AJ Styles on the one hand and Corbin and Kevin Owens on the other. During his entry, Nakamura was attacked again by Corbin, whereupon Corbin and Owens won the match.

Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya, Tamina and Lana in a five-way match

Naomi was able to defeat Lana at Money in the Bank to defend her WWE SmackDown Women's Championship . On July 11, 2017, Naomi confronted Commissioner Shane McMahon on SmackDown Live to find out who would be her next opponent. They were interrupted by Charlotte Flair , Natalya , Becky Lynch , Tamina and Lana , whereupon McMahon set a fatal five-way elimination match for Battleground , the winner of which would receive a title match at SummerSlam on August 20, 2017. Flair and Lynch then lost a tag team match against Natalya and Tamina after Lana intervened in their favor.

The following week, Becky defeated Lynch Flair in a single match after being attacked by Tamina, Natalya and Lana. Then they attacked each other. In the same episode there was a verbal encounter between Naomi and Carmella , holder of the Money-in-the-Bank contract . Carmella stated that she always goes where the title holder goes and that she will meet Naomi at Battleground .

AJ Styles versus Kevin Owens

AJ Styles in April 2016.

In the SmackDown live output of 20 June, in Dayton , Ohio took place, the carrier who spoke WWE United States Championship Kevin Owens an open challenge to his title to any local wrestler. AJ Styles wanted to take on the challenge, but Owens refused because Styles was not a local wrestler. Then the challenge was accepted by Chad Gable , who lost the following match. A week later, Daniel Bryan, in his role as General Manager , decided that an Independence Day - Battle Royal should take place on July 4, 2017 at SmackDown Live , the winner of which could compete for the title at Battleground . This won Styles. Then he was attacked by Owens, which he was able to fend off and posed with the title belt.

Although the title match actually only at Battle Ground was to take place, it was already at a house show on July 7, 2017. meeting between the two rivals. Styles was allowed to defeat Owens and thus received the WWE United States Championship for the first time .

In the following edition of SmackDown Live, Styles presented his Open Challenge , which was accepted by John Cena . However, the match did not come about after the two were attacked by Owens and Cena's rival Rusev . Then Styles and Cena defeated Owens and Rusev in a tag team match, whereupon Owens announced a rematch for the title for Battleground . In the final episode before pay-per-view, Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura lost a tag team match against Owens and Baron Corbin .

John Cena versus Rusev

John Cena and Rusev in a match in April 2015.

After WrestleMania 33 on April 2, 2017, John Cena took time off from WWE to film the second season of the American Grit television series . On June 6, 2017, Cena's return was announced for the July 4th edition of SmackDown Live. In Raw was announced during the week that Cena after the superstar shake-up from now on as a free agent can occur in both shows.

At the Superstar Shake-up , Rusev switched from Raw to SmackDown Live, but was paused at that point due to a (real) shoulder injury. In the following weeks, Rusev appeared repeatedly in videos on the WWE homepage, announcing, among other things, that he wanted to play a match for the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank , but this did not materialize.

On July 4, 2017, both Cena and Rusev returned and fought a battle of words. The Bulgarian Rusev declared the American Dream and the United States a joke, after which he was challenged by Cena to a flag match. Rusev accepted and the match was set for Battleground . A week later attacked Rusev Cena after this, the Open Challenge of AJ Styles to a match for the WWE United States Championship had assumed. In the last issue before Battleground , Cena, who had previously given a patriotic speech about the United States and its flag, was attacked again by Rusev.

Sami Zayn versus Mike Kanellis

At Money in the Bank , Maria Kanellis returned to WWE after seven years. She was accompanied by her husband Mike Kanellis , who made his debut in the WWE. They talked about the "power of love" before they left the ring again. On June 27, they repeated this on SmackDown Live, but were interrupted by Sami Zayn , who then played a match against Baron Corbin .

On July 11th, there was another encounter backstage between Zayn on one side and the Kanellis couple on the other. Maria Kanellis slapped Zayn and Mike Kanellis smashed a vase over his head. The following week there was Mike Kanellis' debut match in WWE against Zayn, which he won. Then a rematch between the two for Battleground was scheduled.

Jinder Mahal versus Randy Orton

Jinder Mahal successfully defended his WWE Championship at Money in the Bank against Randy Orton , who stated in an interview in the following SmackDown Live episode that he would focus on the match after an attack by Mahal's allies, the Singh Brothers ( Samir Singh and Sunil Singh ) to his father cowboy Bob Orton . Due to his past in the Stables Evolution , The Legacy and The Authority, he could understand forming alliances, but did not accept attacks on his family. He also said that after this attack he no longer just wanted to become the new title holder, but wanted to hurt a lot more Mahal. Later that evening, after Mahal defeated Luke Harper in a one-on-one match, Orton attacked the Singh Brothers and Mahal, who fled through the spectator area.

The following week, Orton received another title match for Battleground from McMahon , who, however, allowed Mahal to choose the type of match . Mahal chose a Punjabi prison match that had been announced by Indian veteran The Great Khali a good ten years earlier and had only taken place twice in the WWE so far. On July 4, 2017, Orton announced that he would punish Mahal in the cage.

Mahal himself later announced that he would be bringing the cage to SmackDown Live on July 18, which he did. Orton confronted Mahal again, saying that in the cage he could not get any help from the Singh Brothers, who were the only reason Mahal won and subsequently defended the title.

Pre-show

During the pre-show, Tye Dillinger met Aiden English . English was able to win the match by pinfall after a director's cut .

Pay-per-view

The pay-per-view was the match for the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship between titleholder The Usos ( Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso ) and their challengers Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods of The New Day , which also by her partner Big E accompanied were opened. This ended after a Trouble in Paradise from Kingston to Jimmy Uso, followed by a ropewalk elbow from Woods and a pinfall that brought The New Day the title win. For the first time, Xavier Woods was directly involved in winning the title of The New Day. The recognized Freebird Rule also made Big E the title holder.

Shinsuke Nakamura and Mr. Money-in-the-Bank Baron Corbin then met . Corbin was able to execute a Deep Six on Nakamura, which however narrowly failed to bring the victory. In the end, Corbin attacked Nakamura with an illegal low blow that led to Corbin's disqualification. After the match, Corbin attacked his rival with his Money-in-the-Bank suitcase and an End of Days .

Then it came to the fatal five-way match between Becky Lynch , Charlotte Flair , Lana , Natalya and Tamina . After Lynch had eliminated Tamina and then Lana by giving up in the Dis-arm-her , Natalya pinned her through a roll-up and was eliminated. With another roll-up , Natalya was finally able to pin Flair and secure victory and a title match for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship against Naomi at SummerSlam on August 20, 2017. Then Naomi, who had been watching the match from the commentator's desk, offered Natalya a handshake, which she refused to accept.

In the fourth match, AJ Styles defended the WWE United States Championship against Kevin Owens . In the end, Styles started a crossface against Owens, who was able to counter and won the title for the third time through pinfall.

Next, John Cena and Rusev faced each other in a flag match . Cena won by stipulation after he countered Rusev's task of giving up Accolade and pushed him through two tables with an attitude adjustment .

Then again Mike Kanellis , accompanied by his wife Maria , met Sami Zayn . At the end of the match, Maria got into the ring herself and prevented Zayn from doing an Exploder Suplex on Mike, who then tried to take advantage of it. Zayn finally showed the Exploder Suplex and his finishing move Helluva Kick and won.

Main Event

Jinder Mahal in 2014.

In the main event of the event, Jinder Mahal defended the WWE Championship against Randy Orton in the first Punjabi prison match since 2007. The two kept each other from leaving the inner cage for a long time. When Orton opened the fourth door, he was able to show an RKO to Mahal, but at that moment the Singh Brothers ( Samir Singh and Sunil Singh ) came out from under the ring, prevented Orton from leaving the inner cage through the door and helped Mahal do the same. So Orton had to climb out of the inner cage.

After doing this, he first prevented Mahal from climbing out of the outer cage and then incapacitated the Singh Brothers, including pushing Samir - who was about to climb down the outside of the outer cage and several himself with it Meters above the ground - from the cage through the commentary desk. He then attacked Sunil and Mahal with a chair and tried to leave the outer cage as well. When he was about halfway up the cage, The Great Khali , who last appeared in WWE in 2014, came to the ring and put a stranglehold on Orton, helping Mahal get out of the outer cage and defend the WWE Championship .

After the event

The following Smackdown live episode on 25 July 2017 sought Jinder Mahal for a new opponent for SummerSlam on August 20, 2017. John Cena confronted Mahal, congratulated him on his title defense and then challenged him to a match for the WWE Championship out . Then SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan came out. He explained to Cena that he had to earn the opportunity for the title and set a match between Cena and Shinsuke Nakamura , who had previously defeated Baron Corbin in a Battleground rematch, for the following week. The winner would face Mahal at SummerSlam . Nakamura was allowed to defeat Cena and thus became the new challenger for the title. He was then attacked by Corbin, who was thrown through the commentator's desk by Cena with an attitude adjustment , which laid the foundation for a match between Cena and Corbin at SummerSlam .

Also in the July 25 issue, AJ Styles wanted to play his open rematch for the WWE United States Championship against Kevin Owens , but was interrupted by the returning Chris Jericho , who also wanted to call for an open rematch for the title. After both Styles and Jericho had a contractually secured rematch, Commissioner Shane McMahon set a triple threat match for the title on the same evening. Styles won this and with it the title after he was able to pin Jericho. Immediately thereafter, Owens announced that he would compete for the title again the next week, but there he lost due to a mistake by the referee . Thereupon another match for the title at SummerSlam with McMahon as special referee was announced. Jericho disappeared from the WWE shows in the weeks that followed.

The New Day ( Big E , Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods ) wanted to celebrate their title win, but were first attacked by The Usos ( Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso ). Sami Zayn and Tye Dillinger defeated Aiden English and Mike Kanellis in a tag team match . The following week, Zayn was again defeated by English in a single match, for which he was mocked by the Kanellis couple. In the same broadcast, Rusev issued an open challenge for an opponent at SummerSlam , which Randy Orton accepted.
