WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament was a wrestling event of the market leader World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which was to crown the first WWE United Kingdom Champion in the style of a tournament . As usual in wrestling, the tournament consisted of a series of show fights and the title was awarded within a storyline . The tournament took place on January 14-15, 2017 at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool , Lancashire . The television broadcast was exclusively via the WWE Network .
background
Wrestling is a comparatively large, currently emerging market in the UK. This is served by various independent wrestling promotions and also served by the private broadcaster ITV . This did not go unnoticed by WWE, which as the global market leader wanted to react to the changed market situation in Great Britain. Even before that there were efforts to expand the wrestling market there. SummerSlam took place in London in 1992. There were also several PPVs in Great Britain, for example WWF One Night Only 1997 in Birmingham as well as WWE Insurrextion from 2000 to 2003 and WWE Rebellion from 1999 to 2003 . In addition, British wrestlers such as The British Bulldog , Wade Barrett or William Regal competed in the promotion.
On December 15, 2016, the WWE announced at a press conference in London that it would create a new title , the WWE United Kingdom Championship , which would be awarded in Blackpool , England on January 14 and 15, 2017 . The event was supported by friendly Indy promotions such as Insane Championship Wrestling (ICW), OTT Wrestling and Progress Wrestling .
Astroid Boys from Cardiff contributed the theme song Dusted .
The event sold out on both days and was a success for both the UK wrestling scene and the WWE. After the event, efforts were made to intensify the collaboration, although there are still no concrete plans.
