Peter Thomas England (born November 9, 1993 in Birmingham ), better known by his ring name Pete Dunne , is a British wrestler . His greatest success so far is the one-time win of the United Kingdom Championship, which he was allowed to hold for 685 days.

Wrestling career

Beginnings

Dunne started wrestling training at the age of 12. His first coach was Steve Edwards of Phoenix Wrestling in Canada , but this training was limited and only gave him the basics. Dunne's first appearance as a wrestler was at the 2007 Holbrooks Festival in Coventry , where he first met and wrestled Mark Andrews . He later trained with Max Angelus for a short period and began working on other small local shows, mostly in community centers near Birmingham .

Dunne competed as the masked Tiger Kid until January 2010 - later under the name Pete Dunne after losing a Hair-VS-Mask match against Helix at Riot Act Wrestling in Kent . He then appeared regularly in a tag team , together with his brother Damian Dunne. He spent most of his early career working for as many small independent PhDs as possible, and practicing regularly with Mark Andrews and other friends. During the school holidays, he trained in a new boxing ring at a community center in Cardiff . Dunne began to compete internationally and more regularly in 2011. He competed for LDN Wrestling , traveled to Ireland for Dublin Championship Wrestling , to Wales for Celtic Wrestling & Welsh Wrestling and Scotland for PBW .

Independent leagues (since 2007)

He made his debut at the Holbrooks Festival in Coventry in 2007, where he first met his longtime colleague Mark Andrews, with whom he appeared often from then on. Dunne then switched to Max Angelus, who trained him further.

Dunne started out wearing a mask as the Tiger Kid, but in January 2010 after a so-called Hair vs. Mask at Riot Act Wrestling in Kent. Then he had a day team with Damian Dunne, who played his brother. He also trained with Mark Andrews and had his first international appearances, including for LDN Wrestling and Dublin Championship Wrestling.

In 2011, Dunne and Jim Lee co-founded the wrestling promotion Attack! Pro wrestling, which initially held shows in Birmingham, but then expanded to Cardiff and Bristol . Dunne appeared there mainly as a promoter and as Face , who often competed against his friend Mark Andrews. Later, he was there also Heel , a role he likes to play since then. The heelturn came about at the farewell event for Mark Andrews, who made the leap to Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). Dunne was also the Promotion Champion for 307 days. At the end of 2016 he left his promotion as a performer, but is still co-organizer of the shows.

Since 2016, Dunne has also been a regular wrestler at Revolution Pro Wrestling (RPW) and Progress Wrestling. At RPW he was allowed to hold the RPW British Cruiserweight Championship. At Progress Wrestling, he had a qualify match for WWE's Cruiserweight Classic , but lost to Jack Gallagher . He is also the current Progress World Champion and together with Trent Seven held the promotion tag team title.

World Wrestling Entertainment (since 2017)

On January 14th and 15th, 2017, Dunne entered the WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament and was allowed to advance to the finals, where he was defeated by Tyler Bate . He took on the role of the heel at the tournament. He was then also brought to WWE NXT . He then appeared on the WWE show WWE 205 Live . On May 7, 2017, he became the second WWE United Kingdom Champion at the WWE NXT pay-per-view NXT TakeOver: Chicago by defeating Tyler Bate . His match against Tyler Bate is considered a candidate for the best match of the year in wrestling circles. In the trade magazine Wrestling Observer by Dave Meltzer , the match received a rating of 4.75 stars (with a maximum number of 5, which is given extremely rarely). His reign as champion lasted 685 days and finally lost the title to Walter on April 5, 2019.

On November 23, 2019, he played a Triple Threat Match against Killian Dain and Damien Priest to determine the challenger for the NXT Championship . He won this match and thus received a match for the title against Adam Cole on November 24, 2019. On November 24, 2019, he played a match for Adam Cole's NXT Championship at WWE Survivor Series , which he lost. Together with Matt Riddle , Dunne took part in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament at NXT and they both won. In addition to winning the tournament, they were also awarded a title match for the NXT Tag Team Championships at NXT TakeOver: Portland . On February 16, 2020, they won the NXT Tag Team Championships from The Undisputed ERA Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish . They lost the title on May 13, 2020 against Imperium Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner.
