NXT Takeover: Chicago was a wrestling event of WWE NXT , which on the WWE Network aired. It took place on May 20, 2017 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont , Illinois , United States . It was the 16th hosting of a major NXT event under the name NXT TakeOver since February 2014. For the first time ever, one of these took place in Illinois and thus also in Rosemont and the Allstate Arena.

In the run-up to the event, five matches were scheduled. This resulted from the storylines that in the weeks before NXT Takeover: Chicago at NXT , the weekly WWE Network broadcast developmental league of the WWE were shown. The main fight was a tag team ladder match for the NXT Tag Team Championship between the title winners The Authors of Pain ( Akam and Rezar ) and their challengers #DIY ( Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa ). The two teams previously met at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio on January 28, 2017, when #DIY had to surrender the titles to The Authors of Pain , and at NXT TakeOver: Orlando on April 1, 2017 in a triple threat elimination Tag team match that also included The Revival ( Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson ).
