Mae Young Classic ( MYC ) was a wrestling tournament organized by the wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and published exclusively on the WWE Network . As with all wrestling tournaments, the outcome was determined by a storyline . The Japanese Kairi Sane won the tournament . In the final, she faced former UFC and Strikeforce fighter Shayna Baszler .

background

After the success of the two tournaments Cruiserweight Classic and WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament , a similar tournament was held in which only female wrestlers could participate. The tournament was announced at Wrestlemania 2017. The tournament was named after wrestling legend Mae Young . As in previous tournaments, the WWE NXT development league worked with various independent promotions to determine the 32 wrestlers in the tournament. In the course of the preparation time, the individual wrestlers were named.

The recordings for the tournament took place on July 13th and July 14th 2017 in the Winter Park of the Full Sail University . An exception is the finale, which was recorded on September 12, 2017 following WWE SmackDown Live at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas .
