Kaori Housako ( Japanese 宝 迫 香 織 Housako Kaori , born September 23, 1988 in Hikari , Yamaguchi , Japan ) is a Japanese female wrestler .

Private life

Kaori Housako grew up with her sister three years her senior in Hikari and studied Japanese history at Hōsei University in Tokyo . She completed her studies with a bachelor's degree and then went to Cambodia , where she taught Japanese to orphans.

In her youth, Housako was an avid sailor and successfully participated in college championships as well as national and international competitions. Before she decided to go into professional wrestling, she actually wanted to fulfill her dream and compete in the Olympic Games for her country. Her passion for sailing also served as the inspiration for her pirate gimmick, which is why in Japan she was nicknamed "Onna Kaizoku", which translates as female pirate.

In the past, Housako has appeared in several Japanese shows and has appeared on the theater stage as an actress. On this she was also discovered as a talent for wrestling.

Wrestling career

World Wonder Ring Stardom

Housako's career began in a somewhat unconventional way. While she was on the stage playing a professional wrestler, the then General Manager of the World Wonder Ring Stardom, Fuka Kakimoto, discovered her talent for wrestling and spontaneously invited her to a show of her wrestling promotion. Housako was convinced, signed a contract and made her debut in the ring on January 7, 2012 under the ring name Kairi Hojo against Yuzuki Aikawa.

First as a lone fighter in the ring, she found herself in a tag team with Natsumi Showzuki in November 2012 and the two began to fight as Ho-Show Tennyo for the Goddesses Of Stardom championship, which they finally won on April 29, 2013 and up to a serious injury Showzukis and the resulting separation of the tag team.

Shortly afterwards, Housako and her new partners Kaori Yoneyama and Yuhi were able to secure the Artist of Stardom Championship on June 23, 2013 and hold it until November 4, 2013.

Housako won her second Goddesses of Stardom title with her tag team partner Nanae Takahashi on August 10, 2014 and was won by her first individual title, the World of Stardom Championship, which she received after her victory at the World of Stardom Title Tournament on March 29, 2015 to double title holder. However, she had to contend with an injury to her partner again, so that she had to give up the tag team title in April 2015.

But by winning the Artist of Stardom title for the second time shortly afterwards, this time with her partners Chelsea and Koguma, she was once again a double champion.

With her new partners Io Shirai and Mayu Iwatani, she was the Artist of Stardom Champion for 217 days, the second-longest title reign of her successful stardom career to date. This was only surpassed by her second and last individual title at World Wonder Ring Stardom, because Housako won the Wonder of Stardom championship on May 15, 2016, which she was able to hold for almost one year to the day and therefore also placed third in the has made the longest title reigns for this title.

During this time she became twice the title holder by winning the Goddeses of Stardom title for the third time (with Yoko Bito) and later winning the Artist of Stardom title for the fourth time.

However, during her time at World of Stardom, Housako was not only able to draw attention to herself with numerous title wins, she was also very successful as a tournament fighter, winning the Goddesses of Stardom Tag League 2014 and 2016 as well as the 5 ★ Star GP 2015.

WWE

NXT (2017-2019)

Their successes did not go unnoticed by the American market leader and so WWE signed Housako for the development league NXT in July 2017 and used her in the first match of the newly developed Mae Young Classic tournament on July 13th . Under her new ring name Kairi Sane, Housako was first able to prevail against Tessa Blanchard, Bianca Belair , Toni Storm and in the final on September 12th against Shanya Baszler and thus celebrate her first success right at the beginning of her career at WWE.

Furthermore, she was the first participant in the Fatal-4-Way Match for the vacant NXT Women's Title because of her tournament victory at the upcoming major NXT event NXT Take Over-War Games , but had to, like her opponents Peyton Royce , Nikki Cross , the later winner Ember Moon defeated.

Housako played her first match on NXT and won on October 4th (official TV broadcast - the match was recorded on September 14th) against Aliyah.

On January 28, 2018, Housako was part of the first women's Royal Rumble Match in WWE history. She came into the match as # 6 and was eliminated by Dana Brook after a short time.

At Wrestlemania 34 on April 8, 2018, Housako was involved in a 20 women battle royal, but was eliminated fifth.

Due to her good performance, Housako got the opportunity to win the NXT Women's title several times , but it took until August 18, 2018 for her to win the title for the first time. After she was able to defend her title twice against Lacey Evans , she finally lost it to Shayna Baszler at the major WWE Evolution event on October 28th after she was outside the ring by Baszler's friends and former UFC team members Marina Shafir and Jessamyn Duke (together with Ronda Rousey known as the “Four Horsewomen of the UFC”) and could be pinned as a result.

The intervention of Shafir and Duke led to a very balanced feud lasting several months, during which Housako was first supported by Dakota Kai and later Io Shirai and Bianca Belair. During this feud, Housako also got the opportunity to win Baszler's NXT Women's title repeatedly, but couldn't use any of the chances. Nor could she win a Fatal-4-Way Match for the WWE NXT UK Women's Title from Rhea Ripley.

At the Royal Rumble 2019 she was again part of the 30-women Royal Rumble Match and intervened as # 14 in the fighting. She and Natalya eliminated Sarah Logan before Ruby Riott threw her over the top ring rope after about seventeen minutes.

April 7th. In 2019 Housako was involved in Wrestlemania, the second edition of the 20 Women's Battle Royal, and was promoted from the ring as the seventh fighter after an attack on Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan through a joint effort by the Riott Squad.

Main roster and alliance with Asuka (2019-2020)

At the Smackdown Superstar Shake up episode on April 16, 2019, Paige presented a new tag team that should stir up the women's division under her leadership and since then Housako has been fighting alongside her new partner Asuka under the name Kabuki Warriors. This name was chosen for this new tag team for two reasons: on the one hand, kabuki is an old traditional Japanese form of theater play that includes singing, pantomime and dance and thus alludes to the cultural background of the two women; on the other hand, the addition of Warriors die Express the strength and determination of this new team.

Initially only active in the WWE Live House shows, the tag team earned a title match for the WWE Women's Tag Team title at the IIconics during a tour of Japan. This match took place in the Smackdown issue of July 16, but Billie Kay intentionally let himself be counted immediately after the match started in order not to risk a possible loss of the title, so the two won the match but not the title.

In the Raw episode on August 5, 2019, Housako and Asuka were part of an Elimination Fatal-4-Way Match for the WWE Women's Tag Team together with the teams of Fire and Desire Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose as well as Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross IIconics title Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, but had to admit defeat to the later new titleholders Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross, who were able to successfully defend the title against the Kabuki Warriors in the following Raw edition on August 12th. After several weeks of house show feud against Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose, the Kabuki Warriors celebrated their greatest success as a tag team at WWE on October 6th at the WWE major event Hell in a Cell by winning the WWE Women's Tag Team Champion title .

While Housako and Asuka have always been considered fair crowd favorites, there was a heel turn in the October 7th edition of Raw after the two attacked them before and after their match against Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch, which reached its final climax as Asuka attacked her manager Paige in the October 28 issue, ending the collaboration between them.

On November 24, 2019, Housako was part of the Raw Team along with Charlotte Flair, Natalya, Asuka and Sarah Logan and competed against Team Smackdown ( Sasha Banks , Nikki Cross, Lacey Evans, Carmella and Dana Brook) and Team NXT (Rhea Ripley, Toni Storm, Io Shirai, Bianca Belair and Candice LeRae) in the traditional Women's Survivor Series Elimination Match. She was pinned as the second member of the Raw team by Sasha Banks and eventually lost the entire match won by Team NXT. On April 4, 2020, they lost the titles to Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross. This reign lasted 181 days. On July 27, 2020, it was officially announced that Sane had left WWE at his own request.
