Daria Rae Berenato (born September 24, 1993 in Shamong Township, New Jersey , United States of America ) is an Italian / American wrestler who is under the ring name Sonya Deville with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) under contract and in their weekly Show SmackDown occurs.

Private life

Daria Rae Berenato was born to Italian parents in Shamong Township, New Jersey. She attended Seneca High School in Tabernacle, New Jersey and began training in mixed martial arts (MMA for short) at the age of 16 .

After her outing on an episode of the WWE talent show Tough Enough , Berenato became the first active homosexual wrestler to support the LGBT (lesbian / gay / bisexual / transgender) community. Berenato worked as an actress in several series and films and was co-host of the Youtube show UFC AfterBuzz. In the film "The Honor" she played a Christian raised girl who falls in love with her Muslim neighbor. In reality, too, she fell in love with her acting partner Christina Heath and the two were a couple for a short time. Since 2016 she has been in a relationship with former NXT wrestler Zahra Schreiber, the ex-girlfriend of WWE Superstar Seth Rollins . In 2018 they made their relationship public.

MMA career

Since there are no MMA leagues for women in New Jersey, Berenato only has to assert itself against male participants in training and tournaments. She wins an "All-Boys" tournament and goes to the American Top Team (ATT) in Coconut Creek , Florida on the day of her high school graduation at the age of 17 to pursue her dream of a professional MMA career. Berenato, who has since moved to Los Angeles , California , is taking her active MMA career on hold as # 9 of the State of California's MMA fighters in 2015 to take part in the WWE talent show WWE Tough Enough.

Wrestling career

Tough Enough and NXT (2015-2017)

In June 2015, Berenato got the chance to prove herself against six female and seven male talents in the sixth season of the WWE talent show WWE Tough Enough in order to win a professional contract for one year, in the fourth episode, however, she is 11th from the show . In October 2015, Berenato signs a contract for the WWE expansion program NXT and begins her training at the WWE Performance Center. She loses her ring debut on December 3rd under the ring name Daria against Nia Jax .

In 2016 Berenato got several attempts to win Asuka 's NXT Women's Championship, but could not prevail in the end. On May 3, 2017, Berenato will play her first fight under her new ring name Sonya Deville in a match to determine the next challenger to the NXT Women's Championship. In the course of the match she is eliminated by Peyton Royce and Billie Kay, but then starts a winning streak and can defeat Lacey Evans, Rachel Evers, Jenna van Bemel and Zeda.

Main roster debut (since 2017)

At the live show WWE Tribute to the Troops on December 5, 2017, Berenato teamed up with Mandy Rose and Paige to form Absolution and defeated Bayley , Mickie James and Sasha Banks . This was also her promotion to the main roster of WWE. Berenato made her official debut match for WWE Raw on December 18, 2017, when she lost alongside her teammates to Mickie James, Bayley and Sasha Banks after they were disqualified in an unauthorized attack on Sasha Banks.

At the major WWE Royal Rumble event on January 28, 2018, Berenato participated in the first women's Royal Rumble in WWE history. She came into the match as 10th fighter, eliminated Torrie Wilson and was eliminated by Michelle McCool after 6:18 . One month later, on February 25th, Berenato took part in the first Women's Elimination Chamber Match, along with Bayley, Mandy Rose, Mickie James and Sasha Banks, in which it was a question of the WWE Woman's Championship from title holder Alexa Bliss . She started the match against Bayley and was able to hold out at 17:32 before being the second woman to be eliminated by a pin from Mickie James. After Paige had to end her active career due to a neck injury and took up her new post as General Manager at Smackdown, Berenato continues to form a tag team with her long-time companion Mandy Rose . At the Superstar Shake up on April 16 and 17, Berenato and Rose drafted to Smackdown.

At the first all-female major event WWE Evolution on October 28, 2018, Berenato took part in a 20 Women Battle Royal, which gives the winner a guaranteed title chance. With the help of Mandy Rose, she eliminated her opponents Molly Holly, Kelly Kelly and Torrie Wilson before Mandy turned against her friend and eliminated her from behind.

As part of the Survivor Series on November 18, 2018, Berenato was part of the Smackdown Team in the traditional 5-on-5 Survivor Series Elimination Match and competed alongside Asuka, Carmella , Naomi and Mandy Rose against Team Raw (Sasha Banks, Nia Jax , Tamina Snuka, Bayley and Mickie James). She did the preparatory work for the elimination of Mickie James by Mandy Rose, but in the further course of the match after an action by Bayley did not make it into the ring in time and was counted just like Bayley, whereby she was eliminated from the match. Since then she has appeared in various tag team matches with Mandy Rose .
