WWE Tribute to the Troops is one of World Wrestling Entertainment and Armed Forces Entertainment annually in the Christmas season , held Wrestling -Show for members of the armed forces of the United States . The first editions were recorded in Iraq and Afghanistan , the later editions in the United States. The wrestlers and employees of the WWE visit the troops on site and spend about three days at the respective base. The focus is on a wrestling show that is hosted for the troops. A recording of the show will be broadcast on US television, both initially on the two main shows WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown and as a stand-alone program.
background
The idea for a special wrestling show for the US armed forces came from John "Bradshaw" Layfield , who introduced this proposal to Vince McMahon . The first edition was produced in December 2003. The first show took place at Camp Victory in Baghdad , Iraq . The main event was a fight between John Cena and Big Show , which was interrupted by Stone Cold Steve Austin . For all editions up to 2011, the moderation was added later in Stamford , Connecticut , as the moderators do not travel with them. After the success of the event, the show continued annually,
The first and the following WWE Tribute to the Troops was produced as a special edition by WWE Smackdown. This was followed by two editions of WWE Raw . It was then released as a standalone show on NBC and later on the USA Network .

The fourth edition was recorded on December 25, 2006 in Baghdad, Iraq and aired as a special edition of WWE Raw on the United Paramount Network (UPN). During the tapping, Vince McMahon received the Secretary of Defense Exceptional Public Service Award from Art Myers, Chairman of Air Force Morale, Welfare and Recreation. McMahon handed it over to Layfield, who came up with the idea.

2010
For the first time, the TV special was not recorded in Iraq or Afghanistan. Instead, it was recorded on December 11, 2010 in Fort Hood , Texas . Guest stars included Diddy , Sherri Shepherd , Rima Fakih ( Miss USA ), Trace Adkins and Cedric the Entertainer . In addition, the actress Ariel Winter sang the national anthem The Star-Spangled Banner . The special aired on December 18 in a 60-minute version on NBC, while the USA Network showed the full two hours (but without the national anthem). George W. Bush opened the event with a recorded message and thanked the WWE for the second time.

The 2011 special was recorded on December 11, 2011 at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville , North Carolina in front of members of the US forces from nearby Fort Bragg . As with the previous show, there were two broadcasts: the entire show on December 13, 2017 on the USA Network and a one-hour cut on December 17 on NBC. Both of them lack the national anthem sung by Lilian Garcia . Other musical guests included Nickelback with Burn It to the Ground (censored version) and When We Stand Together as well as Mary J. Blige with Need Someone and Family Affair . Guest stars were former wrestler Sgt. Slaughter and actress Maria Menounos , who even got into the ring. In addition, a speech by US President Barack Obama was recorded.

In 2012, WWE tribute to the Troops was taped on December 9th at The Scope in Norfolk , Virginia in front of members of Naval Station Norfolk . The recording started again with a speech by Barack Obama. Flo Rida and Kid Rock were invited as musical guests . USA Network showed the event on December 19, 2012, and NBC the abridged version on December 22.

It was the first WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown event together after the 2016 Brand Extension . Lillian Garcia sang the national anthem. Michael Cole , Byron Saxton and John Layfield moderated .
