Sesugh Uhaa (born August 22, 1987 in Sacramento , California , USA ) better known by his ring name Apollo Crews , is an American wrestler with Nigerian roots. He is currently under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment . His greatest achievement so far is receiving the WWE United States Championship .
Career
Independent Leagues (2009-2015)
After graduating from college, he began training with Curtis Hughes at the age of 21. After his debut on August 17, 2009 under the ring name Uhaa Nation, he made small appearances for the promotions Pro Wrestling Alliance (PWA) and Great Championship Wrestling (GCW) . On September 9th, 2011 he took part in a tryout seminar by Dragon Gate USA (DGUSA) . On the same day he played his first match for DGUSA when he defeated Aaron Draven. On October 29, 2011, he played his first match for Full Impact Pro (FIP) against Jake Manning and won the FIP Florida Heritage Championship , with which he also secured the first title of his career. After that he made some appearances in Japan for Dragon Gate , DGUSA's Japanese mother doctorate. At the end of 2011 he was voted Newcomer of the Year by DGUSA. On January 14, 2012, he made his EVOLVE debut with a win over Pinkie Sanchez . On March 29, 2012, he was injured, which meant that he was out for a year. He made his return to the ring on February 1, 2013 when he successfully defended his FIP Florida Heritage Championship against Chasyn Rance. He returned to Japan on March 2nd and won the Open The Twin Gate Championship with BxB Hulk when they defeated Don Fuji and Masaaki Mochizuki. They lost the title on May 5, 2013 to TakaYAMA (Shingo Takagi and YAMATO) . On August 9, 2013, he lost his FIP Florida Heritage to Gran Akuma. On November 29, 2014, he made an appearance at Preston City Wrestling (PCW) . In a three way elimination match he defeated the then PCW Champion Chris Masters and Dave Mastiff and took the PCW Championship. He lost the title to Chris Masters on March 14, 2015. He made his last appearance in the independent leagues on March 28, 2015 on World Wrestling Network (WWN) in a tag team match when he and Ricochet lost to Austin Aries and Roderick Strong.
World Wrestling Entertainment
NXT (2015-2016)
On April 13, 2015, WWE announced the signing of Sesugh Uhaa, who went under the ring name Uhaa Nation. He made his debut in a backstage segment with William Regal on the May 6, 2015 issue of NXT . On August 5th he was given the ring name Apollo Crews . In the NXT edition, he played his first match by defeating Martin Stone. On August 22, 2015 on WWE NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn he defeated Tye Dillinger . After that he feuded against Baron Corbin . The feud ended on December 16, 2015 on WWE NXT TakeOver: London with a win over Baron Corbin. Then he feuded against Elias Samson. His last appearance for NXT was on the April 2, 2016 edition of NXT, when he lost to Samoa Joe .
Raw (2016-2019)
He made his debut on the main roster on the Raw edition on April 4, 2016, the Raw broadcast after the major event WrestleMania 32 , with a victory over Tyler Breeze . He then feuded against the Social Outcasts ( Heath Slater , Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas ). During this feud, he defeated all members of the Social Outcasts. He suffered his first loss on the main roster on the May 23rd, 2016 Raw edition against Chris Jericho . After that match, he started a feud against Sheamus . The feud ended on June 19, 2016 at Money in the Bank with a win over Sheamus. At the WWE Draft 2016 , which took place in the SmackDown issue on July 19, 2016, it was drafted to SmackDown.
On April 10, 2017, he switched to Raw through the superstar Shake-Up and later formed a tag team there with Titus O'Neil . However, this separated after some time after it did not get the desired reactions from the audience. Crews was then used as a singles wrestler and occasionally played smaller matches and was also involved in the title event for the WWE Intercontinental Championship , but he was never able to secure the title.
SmackDown (2019-2020)
As part of the Superstar Shake-Up 2019, Crews switched from Raw to SmackDown on April 16, 2019 .
Raw (2019-present)
On April 6, 2020, he switched back to Raw . On May 25, 2020, he won the WWE United States Championship from Andrade . The reign lasted 97 days and finally lost the title to Bobby Lashley on August 30, 2020 .
