Nuufolau Joel (Joe) Seanoa (born March 17, 1979 in Orange County , California ) is an American wrestler . He is better known by his ring name Samoa Joe . He is currently under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment ( WWE ), where he appears on Raw . Seanoa is a former TNA World Heavyweight Champion , as well as a TNA Grand Slam Champion .

Life

Seanoa's family started a Polynesian dance troupe called Tiare Productions in the United States . He made his first stage appearance at the opening ceremony of the 1984 Summer Olympics at the age of 5. In his youth he was mainly active in judo and football .

Wrestling career

Beginnings and assignments in smaller wrestling leagues

In September 1999 he began his wrestling career as the first graduate of the now defunct West Coast Dojo of the UIWA. He trained under the direction of Cincinnati Red. Shortly after his debut, Seanoa signed a contract with Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW), a former farm league of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). There Joe was allowed to win the UPW Heavyweight Championship . After his time in this league, he competed between 2001 and 2002 for Pro Wrestling ZERO-ONE in Japan and between 2003 and 2007 for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla in southern California. He also played matches and a. at Independent Wrestling Association Mid-South (IWA-MS) between 2004 and 2006.

Ring of Honor Wrestling (2002-2007)

Seanoa made his Ring of Honor (ROH) debut in October 2002 during the Glory By Honor event , but started with a loss to Low Ki . Seanoa immediately impressed the fans with his intense style. B. was more suited to an MMA fighter than a wrestler through unusually hard blows .

After a few months in promotion, he became the ROH World Championship by defeating Xavier on March 22, 2003 in Philadelphia at Night of the Champions . He retained the title for 21 months before him on 26 December 2004 at Final Battle 2004 on Austin Aries lost . Shortly after losing the title, he won the ROH Pure Championship from Jay Lethal . In August 2005 he had to give it back to Nigel McGuiness .

He left the Ring of Honor in early 2007, but returned for a match against Tyler Black at Rising Above on November 22, 2008.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2005-2015)

On June 19, 2005 Seanoa made his debut with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) at the Pay-Per-View Slammiversary . At Turning Point on December 11, 2005, Seanoa defeated AJ Styles and won his TNA X Division Championship . At Destination X 2006 there was an Ultimate X Match between Seanoa, Christopher Daniels and Styles. Seanoa lost his title after pinning Daniels Styles. A week before lockdown on April 23, 2006, Seanoa again won the X-Division Championship in a match against Daniels, but lost it to Senshi two months later after Sonjay Dutt pinned Sonjay Dutt in a three-way match .

The third title win followed on June 19, 2007, when he defeated the previous champion Jay Lethal and Chris Sabin . On July 15, 2007 at Victory Road , Seanoa also won the TNA World Tag Team Championship from Team 3D in a match in which World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle was also involved. Due to the specific match regulations, he now held the tag team title alone . He lost both titles on August 12 of the same year at Hard Justice in a match against Kurt Angle, in which all TNA titles were at stake, which were held by Seanoa and Angle.

On April 13, 2008, at the major Lockdown event , Seanoa won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship from Kurt Angle. He lost this to Sting on October 12, 2008 at Bound for Glory . 16 August 2009 at Hard Justice he won for the fourth time the TNA X Division Championship from Homicide . He lost this title on October 8, 2009 at TNA iMPACT! to Amazing Red .

At Against All Odds on February 12, 2012, Seanoa and Magnus won the TNA World Tag Team Championship from Crimson & Matt Morgan . They lost the title on May 13, 2012 at Sacrifice to Christopher Daniels and Kazarian . On September 27, 2012, he defeated Mr. Anderson at Impact Wrestling and won the vacant TNA Television Championship . He lost this title to Devon on December 6, 2012 .

On February 17, 2015, Seanoa announced that he would be leaving TNA because his contract had not been extended.

Return to Ring of Honor Wrestling (2015)

On March 1, 2015, Seanoa made a brief return to the Ring of Honor and challenged ROH World Championship Jay Briscoe. However, he was not allowed to win the match on March 27, 2015.

World Wrestling Entertainment (since 2015)

NXT Champion (2015-2017)

Seanoa made his WWE debut as Samoa Joe on May 20, 2015 when he intervened in the NXT Championship Match between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn at the NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable event . His debut match came on the NXT broadcast on June 10, 2015, when he defeated Scott Dawson.

At NXT TakeOver: Respect on October 9, 2015, Joe and Finn Bálor won the first Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic tournament.

On April 21, 2016 at a NXT house show , Samoa Joe was allowed for the first time the NXT Championship win by defeating Finn Balor. He lost that title to Shinsuke Nakamura on August 20, 2016 on NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn . On November 19, 2016 at NXT TakeOver: Toronto , however, he was able to regain the NXT Championship from it, making him the first wrestler to win the NXT Championship more than once. On December 3, 2016, he lost the title in a house show in Japan back to Nakamura.

Various feuds (2017-2018)

On January 30, 2017, Samoa Joe made his debut in the WWE main grinder when he attacked Seth Rollins at RAW . He played his first match in the main grid at RAW on February 6, 2017, where he defeated Roman Reigns . On December 25, 2017, he was able to win again against Reigns in a title match for the Intercontinental Championship at RAW . Since this was a victory by disqualification , the title did not change.

Feud with AJ Styles and United States Champion (2018-2019)

In April 2018, Samoa Joe switched to SmackDown Live through the superstar shake-up . At WWE SummerSlam on August 19, 2018, he won a match for the WWE Championship against AJ Styles. However, he did not receive the title because this victory was again due to disqualification. He finally won his first title on the WWE main roster on the SmackDown Live broadcast on March 5, 2019, when he won the United States Championship from R-Truth . In this Fatal Four Way match he pinned Andrade , who had accepted the US Championship Open Challenge from R-Truth alongside Joe and Rey Mysterio .

As part of the 2019 Superstar Shake-Up, Joe switched from SmackDown to Raw as WWE United States Champion on April 22, 2019 . The title therefore also changed to this show. The first title defense as United States Champion on Raw had Joe against Rey Mysterio on Money in the Bank , Joe lost this match and thus the title reign ended after 75 days. On the Raw edition, Joe got the title back from Mysterio, who gave it up due to an injury. This reign lasted 20 days and ultimately lost the title to Ricochet .

On July 14, 2019, Joe competed for the WWE Championship against Kofi Kingston , but he lost that match. Due to a knee injury, he was out for a few months. He celebrated his return on November 18, 2019 on Mondaynightraw. Joe was banned from WWE for 30 days on February 24th, 2020 for violating anti-doping guidelines. At the same time he was out of action with an injury. His suspension ended on March 24, 2020.
