- Singapore / Singapore: The people elect Sellapan Ramanathan , the only candidate, to be president for six years .
Thursday September 2, 1999
- Auckland / New Zealand : The British astronomer Ian P. Griffin discovers the asteroid of the main belt (23988) Maungakiekie at the Stardome Observatory .
Friday 3rd September 1999
- Cologne / Germany : The TV station RTL is broadcasting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? first off. It is the German-language adaptation of the British television program Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? , it is moderated by Günther Jauch .
Saturday 4th September 1999
- Buinaksk / Russia : The explosion of a car bomb in front of a residential building in Buinaksk in the Republic of Dagestan kills 64 people. There are 23 children among the dead.
Sunday 5th September 1999
- Dagestan / Russia : Around 2,000 Chechen rebels led by Shamil Salmanowitsch Basajew and Ibn al-Chattab attack Dagestan again and killed several hundred people in Novolakskoye district by September 15 .
- Cologne / Germany : The TV broadcaster RTL broadcasts the television series South Park as the first broadcaster in German-speaking countries.
- Potsdam , Saarbrücken / Germany : The SPD experienced two electoral debacles in the state elections in Brandenburg and Saarland . Ottmar Schreiner subsequently resigns as Federal Managing Director.
Monday 6th September 1999
- Suai / Indonesia : The pro-Indonesian militia Laksaur carried out a massacre of up to 200 in the Nossa Senhora do Rosario church two days after the results of the independence referendum in East Timor were announced , in which the clear majority of the residents were in favor of separating from Indonesia Civilians .

- Atlantic : Hurricane Dennis is weakening considerably. Since it was formed on August 24, its associated winds along the south east coast of the United States have caused accidents with four deaths, damage of US $ 157 million and severe coastal erosion .
- Copenhagen / Denmark : The cubic extension of the Danish Royal Library , called Den Sorte Diamant ( German for the black diamond ), is inaugurated. Its sloping facade is made of polished granite .
Wednesday September 8, 1999
- Berlin / Germany : The Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany, founded in 1949, meets for the first time in the Reichstag building . This was completed in 1894 for the parliament of the empire and set on fire in 1933 , whereupon the Reichstag of the German Reich was dissolved by decree. After that it was empty for 66 years.
- Moscow / Russia : At 11:58 p.m. a bomb explodes on the ground floor of a residential building . 94 people die in the process. A caller to the Russian news agency said the attack was revenge for Russian bombs in the Dagestan War .

- Internet : Brad L. Graham introduces the term “ blogosphere ” to describe the entirety of weblogs .
Saturday 11th September 1999
- Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia : Salahuddin Abdul Aziz is elected the eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong ( Electoral King ) of Malaysia. He is the oldest person in this office to date.
- St. Gallen / Switzerland : The privately operated , Roman Catholic television station K-TV starts operating.
- Venice / Italy : At the 56th Venice International Film Festival , the Chinese film Nobody Less - Not One Less was awarded the Leone d'Oro . For director Zhang Yimou it is already the second Golden Lion, something only André Cayatte has achieved so far .

- Boston / United States : The founder of the Free Software Foundation Richard Stallman presents the first draft of the GNU license for free documentation with the version number 0.9 in a newsgroup .
- Erfurt / Germany : In the state elections in Thuringia , the CDU under Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel achieved an absolute majority with 51% of the vote. The PDS becomes the second strongest party in Thuringia for the first time. The voter turnout breaks in the double-digit percentage range.
- Los Angeles / United States : At the award ceremony for the Emmy TV award , u. a. the stand-up comedian Chris Rock for his program The Chris Rock Show .
- New York / United States : The American tennis player Andre Agassi wins the US Open in 1999 , the final in the men's singles against his compatriot Todd Martin in five sets.
Monday September 13, 1999
- Auckland / New Zealand : At the eleventh summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Community APEC, the principle of an APEC Business Travel Card ( German APEC business travel document ) is adopted. The long-term goal of the members is a free trade area .
- Brussels / Belgium : The Italian politician Romano Prodi ( Partito Populare ) succeeds the transitional president of the European Commission Manuel Marín from Spain . The European Parliament has already signaled its approval, and official parliamentary confirmation from the Commission is scheduled for September 15th.
- Moscow / Russia : A bomb explodes around 5 a.m. in an apartment in the south of Moscow, killing 118 people. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin then declares war on "illegal combat units" in Chechnya , even if observers believe that there is no evidence of Chechen perpetrators.

- New York / United States : The United Nations admit Kiribati , Nauru and Tonga as members.
Friday 17th September 1999
- Athens / Greece : The Greek stock index Athex Composite Share Price Index (Athex) concludes with an all-time high, reaching 6,355.04 points.
- Brussels / Belgium : The new EU - Commission under President Romano Prodi of Italy releases the Commission Marín from. The Spaniard Manuel Marín joined with his commission in March, the successor of because of a corruption scandal around Edith Cresson resigned Commission under Jacques Santer from Luxembourg to.
- Vienna / Austria : The apprenticeships computer scientist , IT electronics technician and IT businessman / woman are introduced.

- Bregenz / Austria : Two weeks before the National Council election , the ÖVP and SPÖ record losses in the state elections in Vorarlberg . In return, the FPÖ is on the upswing with an increase of around 9% in the vote and is even more clearly in second place than the SPÖ in 1994 .
- Dresden / Germany : In the state election in Saxony to 56.9% of voters opt for the CDU of Prime Minister Kurt Biedenkopf . The PDS reaches 22.2% and for the first time replaces the SPD as the second strongest force. Their share of the vote of 10.7% is a sign of crisis for the People's Party .

- Dili / Indonesia : In East Timor land the first Australian units of the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) to control the region. There are minor clashes with the pro-Indonesian militias.
Tuesday September 21, 1999
- Jiji / Taiwan : Taiwan is shaken by a severe earthquake . Four strong aftershocks followed within four hours. Over 2,400 people are killed in the 921 earthquake and around 50,000 are injured.
Thursday September 23, 1999
- Sanaa / Yemen : The first direct election of the head of state is taking place in Yemen , with the incumbent President Ali Abdullah Salih being elected for a further five years. The turnout is around 66%. As President of the Yemeni Arab Republic, Salih dedicated himself from 1978 to the reunification of North Yemen with the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen .

- Oberhausen / Germany : The world premiere of the musical Tabaluga & Lilli by Peter Maffay , for which the Metronom Theater was designed, takes place.
- Oslo / Norway : The Kystpartiet ( German coastal party ), a conservative political party in Norway, is officially recognized along with its name by the “Notarius Politicus”.
- Santa Barbara County / United States : The Ikonos commercial earth observation satellite launches at 6:22 p.m. Universal Time with an Athena-2 rocket from Launch Complex 6 at Vandenberg Air Force Base .
Saturday 25th September 1999
- Lautém / Indonesia : On the Malailada river in East Timor , members of the pro-Indonesian militia Team Alfa, led by Joni Marques, murder nine people near the road from Lautém to Baucau . Among the victims are two nuns, three fathers and an Indonesian journalist.
- Rio de Janeiro / Brazil : After a long legal battle, Mesquita splits off from Nova Iguaçu and becomes its own municipality .
- Rome / Italy : The prototype of the military multi-purpose transporter Alenia C-27J completes its maiden flight. The model has short take-off properties ( Stol ) and is manufactured by the Italian- American joint venture “Global Military Aircraft Systems” under the leadership of L-3 Communications , New York .

- Banja Luka / Bosnia and Herzegovina : The country's ethnic Serbs found their conservative political party Partija demokratskog progresa ( German Party of Democratic Progress ).
- Berlin / Germany : The Kenyan Tegla Loroupe sets a new world record in the women's marathon . In the Berlin Marathon , she completed the 42.195 km in 2 hours 20 minutes 43 seconds and thus undercuts her own record of 1998 by four seconds.
- Cairo / Egypt : In the presidential elections , President Muhammad Husni Mubarak is confirmed in office for a fourth six-year term.
Monday September 27, 1999
- Düsseldorf / Germany : At a press conference, the energy companies VEBA and VIAG announce their merger to become the third-largest German group with the name E.ON AG .
- Copenhagen / Denmark : The Anders Fogh Rasmussen government takes over the affairs of government from the Poul Nyrup Rasmussen government .
- Mainz / Germany : The television station Sat.1 broadcasts the first episode of the pseudo-documentary court show Judge Barbara Salesch .

- Amsterdam / Netherlands : Queen Beatrix re- opens the museum in the Anne Frank House , which was rebuilt according to designs by the Benthem Crouwel architectural office . It now spans the entire building and includes a bookstore and cafe.
Thursday September 30, 1999
- Stockholm / Sweden : The German Günter Grass , born in Gdansk in 1927 , received the Nobel Prize for Literature that year . One of his most famous works is The Tin Drum .
